Comment With patience (Score 1) 298

With patience and much forethought. I spent many years working with windows systems but always made sure those around me knew I knew Linux. People in the know recommended me for a network ops job where everyone else ran Linux. (or OS X [BSD]) Before that, it was never part of my work life. From there a began maintaining Linux servers and eventually moved on to an *nix admin position.

Comment Better regualte the free markets! (Score 1) 214

I thought IPv4 was gone, all the IPs handed out willy-nilly for free?

Oh wait, the free market is allocating them more efficiently now that they are all quasi private property?

Better pull out the legislation to stop this and force IPv6 to go faster just cause we want it to.

I always wondered why the ISP I worked at could just be handed a /16 for free with unverified supporting documentation!

Disclaimer: I like IPv6, but I am preempting any comments proposing we stop this IPv4 "black market".

Comment Stop being angry (Score 1) 358

Why is everyone so angry? Yeah his project wasn't very nice, but he wasn't really spying on people. Does he know what they were doing on the computer? Did he copy their browsing history, log their passwords? No. The stores have surveillance cameras, the patrons were already being recorded. Does that make what he did right? No, but it is interesting. Did you want him to go to jail for 10 years and never be allowed to touch an electronic device ever again? Apple could have sued him in civil court, but even they decided it would be bad PR and/or was not worth it.

At Chicago's Billy Goat Tavern, construction workers found physical threats an effective way to discourage smart-ass Whitney Young High School students from playing annoying jukebox songs over and over again.

What the hell? Somebody want to fill me in? I just spent ten minutes googling for some news item about this and came up empty handed ...

Obviously the submitter lived, worked, or went to school nearby. It is true though, my nicotine addicted friends would always huddle at Billy Goats in the back by the jukebox so they could smoke during lunch (back when you could inside...). The constructions workers from building projects nearby were a bunch of jerks though, throwing crap off the scaffolding on us as we'd walk back to school.

Comment Suren claim to fame is: He's the "producer" (Score 1) 366

From the website:

Suren Ter (me) I’m a producer of the site. Like a movie producer, I made the site. Ruslan is a visionary. He did the necessary research and invented the technical tricks. Ilia is a programmer. He does the code. You see those tables, html and widgets? He did it. Me? I don’t do code, I don’t do research, I don’t do design — I do sites. Drop me a message if you’d like.

This guy's attitude is right in line with any "producer." They market other people's work to earn fame and/or money for themselves. Now, the two programmers, they actually MADE something and I don't see them complaining about "IP theft." A producer makes money from selling the product, the more money the product makes, the more successful they are. Actual creative minds (the programmers in this case), might make a bit of money, might get a job offer, but most importantly they have pride for having created something! Suren has nothing without being the gatekeeper.
