Exactly! This is what I've been trying to tell people the whole election - Republicans AREN'T Republican anymore. They have as a group become very Authoritarian/Centrist.

I would have voted Republican this year if there had been one running. The last candidate to run on a real Republican platform was Bush. The trouble with that was it was all a lie. He ran on a platform mostly opposite of what he did. Twice. I still can't believe people believed him the second time around.

Submission + - Paramount Working on New Dune Movie

WedgeTalon writes: Variety reports that Kevin Misher, having spent a year working with the Herbert estate to get movie rights, will be producing a Dune movie through Paramount. He's tapped Peter Berg to direct. Richard Rubenstein, who produced Sci-Fi's "Dune" and sequel "Children of Dune," is also producing alongside Sarah Aubrey of Film 44 (Berg's production banner). The producers claim, as always, that they are seeking a faithful script. Let's all hope they actually find one.

An anonymous reader suggests we stop over to ZDNet for a case where Google may be stepping on the wrong side of that famous Don't Be Evil line. A Google staffer is offering to help the healthcare industry contain the damage that Michael Moore's film is about to do. (Here is the original Google Health Advertisement blog post by Lauren Turner; in case it disappears, it is reproduced in full in the ZDNet post.) Quoting from the Google post: "Many of our clients face these issues; companies come to us hoping we can help them better manage their reputations through 'Get the Facts' or issue management campaigns. Very Long Time Anonymous Coward writes: I've recently put together my new PC from scratch, filling up the PCI slots with audio and firewire cards, and a graphics card in the 16-lane PCI Express slot. But my micro ATX motherboard also came with a PCI Express slot with a single lane. I've looked around on the net and the only cards I can find are Gigabit ethernet, which just about every new motherboard you can buy supports anyway. What do you do with your empty single lane PCI Express slot?

Alan Cox Files Patent For DRM 281

booooh writes "Alan Cox has filed a patent for DRM (Digital Rights Management). From the filing: 'A rights management system monitors and controls use of a computer program to prevent use that is not in compliance with acceptable terms.' According to the patent pledge of Cox's employer Red Hat, they will not license this technology if the patent is granted. And it can probably be applied to the DRM that is in Vista. This forum has a few more details.

Our sun also flares when twisted magnetic field lines in the solar atmosphere suddenly snap — but this was on a far larger scale, perhaps 100 million times as strong. The energy released by the explosion on II Pegasi was equivalent to about 50 quintillion atomic bombs. If the Sun were ever to produce such an outburst, it would almost certainly cause a mass extinction on Earth. II Pegasi is a binary system 135 light-years from Earth in the constellation Pegasus. Its two stars are close, only a few stellar radii apart; as a result, tidal forces cause both stars to spin quickly, rotating in lockstep once in seven days compared to the Sun's 28-day rotation period. Fast rotation is thought to be conducive to strong stellar flares."

IE7 Blocking Google Image Search? 253

An anonymous reader writes, "I just tried a Google Image Search in IE7 for the first time. Whenever I click on an image, my browser tells me in big bold letters, "This is a reported phishing website." Try it yourself: make sure automatic phishing detection is turned on and do an (adorable) image search; click on one of the result thumbnails. MSN Live Image Search has no such issues. Insert Microsoft evil conspiracy theory here." I get this behavior under IE7, Win XP Pro, SP2, Parallels, Mac OS X.

Jack Thompson To Face Contempt Charge 239

Gamasutra has the story (by way of the currently-down GamePolitics) that Jack Thompson could be facing a contempt charge over his antics during the Bully fiasco. From the article: "According to the report, the contempt of court request could find Thompson facing jail time, though it is more likely that 'fines, judicial admonishment or censure' would result from this most recent turn of events. The report also notes that attorneys representing the Philadelphia law firm Blank-Rome have filed a 'Petition for Order to Show Cause,' which requires Thompson to illustrate to a judge why he should not be held in contempt."

Roland Piquepaille writes, "In 'Atomic Physics Predicts Successful Store Location,' LiveScience reports that a French physicist has applied methods used to study atomic interactions for another task: to 'help business owners find the best places to locate their stores.' Pablo Jensen has used his method for the city of Lyon and is now developing software with the local Chamber of Commerce to help future business owners. Read more for additional references and maps of the city of Lyon showing for example the best locations to open a bakery, according to atomic physics." Jensen says that more research is needed to know if this method would work in other cities.
