Submission + - Global warming debunked

ROMRIX writes:
Climate change will be considered a joke in five years time, meteorologist Augie Auer told the annual meeting of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers in Ashburton this week.

Man's contribution to the greenhouse gases was so small we couldn't change the climate if we tried, he maintained.
"We're all going to survive this. It's all going to be a joke in five years," he said.
A combination of misinterpreted and misguided science, media hype, and political spin had created the current hysteria and it was time to put a stop to it.
"It is time to attack the myth of global warming," he said.
Water vapour was responsible for 95 per cent of the greenhouse effect, an effect which was vital to keep the world warm, he explained.
"If we didn't have the greenhouse effect the planet would be at minus 18 deg C but because we do have the greenhouse effect it is plus 15 deg C, all the time."
The other greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen dioxide, and various others including CFCs, contributed only five per cent of the effect, carbon dioxide being by far the greatest contributor at 3.6 per cent.
However, carbon dioxide as a result of man's activities was only 3.2 per cent of that, hence only 0.12 per cent of the greenhouse gases in total. Human-related methane, nitrogen dioxide and CFCs etc made similarly minuscule contributions to the effect: 0.066, 0.047 and 0.046 per cent respectively.

It may not be mainstream media, but it's a start. I have yet to hear one single compelling argument that is not fomented with conjecture, hearsay and lies that would compel me to believe that MAN is the cause of climate change. For once I would like to hear/read something that could be substantiated by verifiable fact. If you have something tangible then lay it on the table and lets have a look at it. Otherwise I have better things to do. (I'm building a hybrid Hummer in my garage just in case it goes either way.)

Submission + - Microsoft - Linux patent immunity

An anonymous reader writes: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=200705181 24020691 This is news indeed. Todd Bishop has the story. Eben Moglen is saying that the SUSE vouchers Microsoft is distributing have no expiration date! I didn't know this. It's huge. This is, according to Moglen's remarks, another defense to any patent infringement claim by Microsoft, and it may well bring that campaign to a screeching halt. Here's why. Someone, Moglen says, is bound to turn a voucher it got from Microsoft in after GPLv3 goes into effect and GPLv3 code is being distributed, and at that moment Microsoft comes under its terms. And that should mean the end of Microsoft's ability to successfully sue anybody over its alleged patents allegedly in Linux, or to phrase it more exactly, it provides a probable defense to all Linux users and vendors, not just Novell's paying customers, if Microsoft does sue.

Submission + - Boosting solar energy plants efficiency

Roland Piquepaille writes: "Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have invented a new way to make solar collector systems more energy efficient. The theoretical overlay photographic (TOP) technology developed at Sandia uses mirrors to focus radiation from the sun as a source of heat for power generation. In fact, they've created a mirror alignment measurement device for parabolic troughs which is drawing interest from the solar industry because it is affordable and because we need to find solutions for global warming. This device has already been successfully tested at a solar plant near Tucson, Arizona. And it should soon be tested in commercial solar plants in California. Read more for additional references and a picture of this calibrating solar dish collector."

Submission + - Indian retailers raided by Microsoft

slashthedot writes: "Microsoft caught some Indian retailers selling pirated copies by sending a dummy customer asking for a copy of Windows to be installed on their PC. The retailers say Microsoft products are too highly priced for Indian market, so many people won't be interested in buying original copies at that price. They even go on to say they are promoting MS software in this way.
One retailer was heard saying:
"Since we are are not charging anything extra for installing the software, it means that we are actually not trading in pirated software. For us this is just a sewa (selfless act) that we are offering to our customers. Besides, the pricing of their operating systems is way too high for the Indian markets."

Submission + - TAMU hacked?

An anonymous reader writes: Now that we at TAMU have 1 ID (login) to rule them all we can be happy that our personal data is more secure....not. The story is here, and everyone is getting notices that look like this:

"Regrettably, a recent attempt was made to gain unauthorized access to encrypted electronic data, and as a result, a number of Texas A&M University NetID passwords may have been compromised — including yours.

While the security violation was quickly identified and stopped, we believe it is important to take all necessary steps to ensure that everyone is fully protected from unauthorized use of their private information. Therefore, as a precautionary measure to protect your privacy, you are required to change your NetID password immediately."

Submission + - Using Safari can slow your system down?

sandoz writes: While how fast a browser can render a web page is certainly an important weapon in the browser war arguments, the difference is usually a matter of seconds at the most. To my mind, a more important measure of speed is how a browser affects the overall speed of your SYSTEM. Macenstein has any interesting article about how running Safari seems to slow down unrelated programs. You can read the article here
