Submission + - A sad day for EE's everywhere (edn.com)

supervillainsf writes: There is not much to say here. Bob Pease was involved in a fatal car accident over the weekend and is no longer with us. It is a sad day.

Um, 8 years is not "a lot" later.

Furthermore, you should probably do a little research on:
a) Japans war with China
b) Japans request that we stop providing aid to China
c) why the U.S. placed an embargo on Japan
d) how that ties in to the bombing or Pearl Harbor.

Add a bit of general WWII history and then we can have an intelligent conversation about this topic

The GP didn't say he installed in on his computer either, just that he said he'd been using it. Perhaps he has a test lab as well. You also ignore the possiblity of:
a) virtual machines
b) multi-boot
c) Spare fucking computers laying around.
So, based on what appears to be a total lack of intelligent thought on your part prior to posting your very informative opinion, it seems that nothing you say matters either.

Yes, just as we saw with the FISA amendment. First Obama said he would fight to get rid of the telecom immunity Then when he flopped I seem to remember some supporters here spewed the same constitutional scholar crap saying he would probably get rid of the immunity clause when he was elected. Now we see that was completely false. The only thing that his being a constitutional scholar means is that he has a good idea of what rights of the people he's violating as he's doing it.

That's one of (many) reasons I don't use a Linux desktop.

If you don't use a Linux desktop then I fail to see how you have clipboard issues between applications on Linux. I guess you could be an admin, but then there aren't any real circumstances where you would be copy/pasting between applications since you aren't running X on your servers.

Submission + - NASA taps MIT to map moon (networkworld.com)

coondoggie writes: "NASA said last week that MIT will lead a $375 million mission to map the moon and reconstruct its thermal history. The mission, called the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) will put two separate satellites into orbit around the moon to precisely map variations in the moon's gravitational pull. These changes will reveal differences in density of the moon's crust and mantle, and can be used to answer fundamental questions about the moon's internal structure and its history of collisions with asteroids, NASA said in a statement. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/23086"

Submission + - First commerical open source game in development

LingNoi writes: Blender's project Apricot has begun work on creating the first open source commerical title scheduled for release on Windows, Linux and Mac platforms. The project is being funded by the Blender and Crystal Space communities in an effort to address the problems that professionals face in the games industry with regards to using Blender 3d and Crystal Space engine.

Discussions have already begun on improvements that can be made on the blender forums.

Submission + - Science Cafes - Where scientists and laymen meet

ErikInterlude writes: I recently heard about "Science Cafes", which apparently are cafes or pubs where organizers bring in a scientist to present a slide show or give a speech about his or her field of expertise. The Wired article that discusses the idea mentions that these cafes are being successful in the US, but this article is the only mention I've found in mainstream media. Has anyone been to one of these things and if so, how worthwhile was it?

Submission + - Ulteo OpenOffice Desktop - Beyond Cool

ghbpiper writes: Desktop linux had an article recently about Ulteo openoffice.org desktop. OpenOffice.org goes online with SAAS version. Seems to me they just blew past both Google and Microsoft, esp in terms of the functionality possible in applications running in the cloud. I wonder how many chairs lost their lives over this in a particular executive's office in Redmond, WA?

Submission + - Wikipedia COO was Convicted Felon (theregister.co.uk) 4

An anonymous reader writes: From the Register:

"For more than six months, beginning in January of this year, Wikipedia's million-dollar check book was balanced by a convicted felon. When Carolyn Bothwell Doran was hired as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Florida-based Wikimedia Foundation, she had a criminal record in three other states — Virginia, Maryland, and Texas — and she was still on parole for a DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol) hit and run that resulted in a fatality. Her record also included convictions for passing bad checks, theft, petty larceny, additional DUIs, and unlawfully wounding her boyfriend with a gun shot to the chest."
