That's interesting. How old are the kids? I'm guessing that most kids just live with the headphone jack problems rather than report it.

Also, if they know the break was their fault they may just get their parents to buy them a new one.

Do they have to return the ipads at the end of the year? It'll be interesting if the ratio of broken/lost devices continues at the end of the year.

Comment Re:$30 mil per movie title! (Score 1) 199

It depends. There are a lot of factors that could influence price.

Time. How long does this last? Does $30 mil get them a years worth of access? 5 years? 10 years?
Exclusivity. Is Netflix going to be the only ones who have access to these movies via streaming? Do others get rights, too, but Netflix gets to show first? How long before someone else can show the movies?
Same price for each movie or average? Are some new release movies costing them $50mil while others only $3 mil?

People keep bringing up the loss of Starz but I suspect that once that contract expired Starz started asking for a much larger (undisclosed) amount. The amount they paid Starz for movies was undoubtedly going to go up now that they have many more subscribers.

Do You Want Best Buy Opening Your New Laptop? 543

An anonymous reader writes "I went to Best Buy the other day to get a new laptop for a client. I didn't realize till I got it home that they had broken the seal and opened the box. They put a sticker on the box that said, 'Inspected by Best Buy.' I found they had created the user profile, recovery disks, and installed a trial of Trend Antivirus. Seems to me this is more of a marketing agenda than inspection."

Canada To Adopt On-Line Voting? 405

belmolis writes "Here in Canada we have an old-fashioned paper ballot voting system that by all accounts works very well. We get results quickly and without fraud. Nonetheless, Elections Canada wants to test on-line voting. From the article: 'The head of the agency in charge of federal elections says it's time to modernize Canada's elections, including testing online voting and ending a ban on publishing early election results.' Is it worth trying to fix a system that isn't broken?"

Syrian Hackers Deface Anonymous' Social Network 80

CWmike writes "After the hacking gang Anonymous took credit for defacing Syria's Ministry of Defense website, a Syrian group retaliated on Monday by posting gruesome photos on Anonymous' embryonic social network. The defacement of AnonPlus — the site Anonymous set up last month when it was booted off Google+ — did not include the name of the group responsible. The University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, however, credited the AnonPlus defacement to the 'Syrian Electronic Army' in a message posted to Twitter. 'In response to your hacking to the website of the Syrian Ministry of Defence, the Syrian people have decided to purify the internet of [y]our pathetic website,' the defacement read."
