Comment Re:Planescape was a great game.... (Score 1) 99

Science fiction and fantasy do get celebrated for their literary value when they deserve it. A good recent example is Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. It won a little award called the Pulitzer Prize in 2001. I don't know how you can get much more celebrated than that. There are plenty other examples of celebrated SF and fantasy. Frankenstein is usually regarded as a pretty important work of literature, for example.

Yes, there are literary snobs who look down on these two genres. But, truly great works of literature transcend their categories. People don't celebrate mainstream fiction just because it is that. It has to be good to get recognized for its literary value.

Submission + - hard drives that are used often, last longer?

tora201 writes: The BBC reports that Google engineers have surprisingly discovered that the impact of heavy use and high temperatures on hard disk drive failure may be overstated. From the article: "Google employs its own file system to organise the storage of data, using inexpensive commercially available hard drives rather than bespoke systems. Hard drives less than three years old and used a lot are less likely to fail than similarly aged hard drives that are used infrequently, according to the report."

Submission + - Bethesda Laments the PS3 Controller

Richard Manley writes: "Gameworld Network writes that Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks has commented on the SIXAXIS controller. When asked what he thought of the SIXAXIS in general, he replied:

"I think that its value depends upon the game. It didn't make sense on Oblivion but I'm sure there are some games it does make sense on. To be honest I would rather have the rumble instead of the SIXAXIS motion stuff. When you're playing Oblivion it's nice to feel the weapons connecting with an opponent, so the absence of the rumble is notable when playing Elder Scrolls."

When asked if he has ever thought of including SIXAXIS motion support in the PS3 version of Oblivion, he stated:

"We didn't think about doing anything with the SIXAXIS stuff. We just wanted to make sure it played well and doing something new with the SIXAXIS just wasn't even necessary. Obviously if we ever have a game that would work well with the SIXAXIS then we would consider using it... but that wasn't an option for Oblivion.""
