Canadian DMCA Coming This Spring 153

An anonymous reader writes "The Canadian government is reportedly ready to introduce copyright reform legislation this spring, provided that no election is called. The new bill would move Canada far closer to the U.S. on copyright, with DMCA-style anti-circumvention legislation that prohibits circumvention of DRM systems and bans software and mod chips that can be used to circumvent such systems."

Student Financial Aid Database Being Misused 182

pin_gween writes "The Washington Post reports on the probable abuse of the National Student Loan Data System. The database was created in 1993 to help determine which students are eligible for financial aid. Students' Social Security numbers, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and loan balances are in the database. It contains 60 million student records and is covered by federal privacy laws. Advocates worry that businesses are trolling for marketing data they can use to bombard students with mass mailings or other solicitations. The department has spent over $650,000 in the past four years protecting the data. However, some senior education officials are advocating a temporary shutdown of access to the database until tighter security measures can be put in place."

Submission + - Google buys ad firm DoubleClick for $3.1 billion

An anonymous reader writes: In its largest acquisition yet, Google has agreed to pay $3.1 billion in cash for online ad company DoubleClick, the companies announced Friday.

The deal gives Google a large network of advertisers and Web publishers to serve and sell ads to, and it boosts the search giant's banner advertising business, which lagged rival Yahoo's.

An anonymous reader writes: The Economist has identified the areas to invest: from prediction markets to social networks. As previuosly covered in Slashdot.

Matt Locke ties it all (BBC Innovation Labs, Backstage, Participate) up with sound advice for those using crowdsourcing for idea collection: Know who you want to have a conversation with. Know how your community talks to itself. Be clear about the structure of your conversation. Not everything has to be out in the open. Make open innovation networks IP-free spaces.

Submission + - Habeas corpus done away with?

Fish The Pirate writes: A bill in the Military Commissions Act of 2006 apparently eliminates habeas corpus.
From the article:'The president has now succeeded where no one has before. Hes managed to kill the writ of habeas corpus. Tonight, a special investigation, how that, in turn, kills nothing less than your Bill of Rights. Because the Mark Foley story began to break on the night of September 28, exploding the following day, many people may not have noticed the bill passed by the Senate that night.'
Now, you'll have to bear with me on this one, but isn't this a good thing? I mean, who needs some old spell for raising the dead anyway?
