Submission + - EEF pressed Apple to indemnify developers (networkworld.com)

Julie188 writes: "The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is calling on Apple to indemnify its developers from Lodsys — a patent troll that's alleging patent infringement on the in-app purchasing used by iOS apps. (That's the technology developed by Apple and forced on many of its developers.) The letters Lodsys has been sending out came to light on May 13th, and apparently developers have been asking Apple for help to no avail."

Submission + - Sprint/Google Voice users seeing overage charges (zdnet.com)

ndtechnologies writes: "Sprint users are reporting overage charges after integrating Google Voice to their Sprint phone. The charges occur after the user integrates using Option 2. Sprint/Google did not notify users that this could happen, before integration, but have verified it in their respective forums after the service has launched."
Sony

Submission + - Sony hacked again (computerworld.com)

mcgrew writes: Computerworld is reporting yet another breach of Sony's laughable (it must be) security, saying $1,200 worth of "virtual tokens" have been taken.

The same article notes that F-Secure has discovered a phishing site in Thailand that's hosted on Sony's servers.

It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - 10 things IT groups need to know about The Rapture (networkworld.com)

alphadogg writes: If May 21 is really the end of the world, as preacher Harold Camping predicts, here's how IT can cover its butt. For starters, don't panic, wait on installing Windows 7 and automate everything. Network World's John Cox has you covered in this piece.

Comment I like it! (Score 1) 2254

It's scaled down a little bit, and overall, I like it much better. With that said, let's hope this goes better than Digg v4 did...I'd hate to see /. die a slow death too. Then I'll have nowhere else to troll on the internet. I've been banned from 4chan, and Reddit won't have me. Facebook and MySpace both left me and I burned the bridge with Friendster and Classmates, and Twitter just won't shut up. I don't know what I'd do without you /.

Comment I will gladly go back there... (Score 1) 153

My family still lives in FC, and I will gladly move back there if we can get some more tech in the area. With all of the abandoned textile mills, it would be dirt cheap to raze it and build something new, plus bandwidth is cheap too (and electricity). Plus it is a BEAUTIFUL area, with Lake Lure only 20 minutes west.

I've gone to streaming over Roku from Netflix/Amazon for well over the last year. I agree that it isn't a perfect system and when the internet goes down, it is really annoying to not be able to watch our content. We'll probably never get rid of our DVD player for this fact. However, with that said, I won't upgrade to Blu-Ray until they bring the price of hardware down to a reasonable level. Same thing goes for their overpriced movies.

As someone that has just recently broken the 50k/year salary range, I can say that this is true. Money does not buy happiness. Money brings relief. Relief in knowing that you can pay your bills on time. Knowing that you can buy the groceries you need for your family. Knowing that if you have to go to the doctor, or the ER, that it won't bankrupt you. I'm trying to provide for my family on 50k/year. It's difficult, considering how expensive our basic necessities are (ie Groceries, Utilities, etc). We live very frugal, but it's still tight, and we still get stressed.
