... the Palm will be squeezed out again. I think Palm had a great product 10 years ago, but seem to be a day late and a dollar short when it comes to new technology. The Pre LOOKS good, but after using it, you kinda get the feeling it could have been done better. I think once users start getting the HTC Hero (Android) phone, Palm will be an also-ran. Developers will move to the Android market. Just my opinion.

Sure, because all of the previous Android phones have set the world on fire.

No, most people aren't missing the point. You have no clue what you're talking about.

In WebOS, you can write Free Software, post an .IPK on your website, and people can download it with their phones and have it installed a couple of clicks later. Even better, you can post it on precentral.net, and have it available in an open-source app repository on the phone and install it with ONE click. Without EVER talking to Palm.

What you are whinging about is already happening. Perhaps some research is suggested before your next rant, grasshopper.

Incidentally, I disagree that it's on Slashdot because of JWZ, it would probably still be on because it's a tech article that's making it's rounds.

Anyone can write Palm WebOs apps and start their own App Store. The operating system is linux and completely open. JWZ's crap is already available via "Homebrew" installation on the Pre, including the precentral.net app catalog, browsable on the phone with a couple different apps for easy installation. TFA is specifically related to getting an application into the Palm Store. They have requirements, some of which may be arbitrary. But it's their store. You want to get crap into Wal Mart, you gotta obey their rules too.

No. No no no no no. No. Your "build it yourself" MythTV box IS NOT A TIVO. It DOES NOT have "more functionality" than a TiVo. If you had seen a TiVo and a MythTV box, you would understand. Yes, they both record stuff. That's pretty much where the comparison ends. Compare this to the old school of thought: "Why bother buying a servar?! You can just slap together some random parts and put slackware on it for free$$!!!". Um, no. Not the same thing.

Tivo didnt invent anything that wasnt already KNOWN. THey took existing hardware, tied it together with some nice software and see 'oo look at we invented'. The DVR was an inevitable INCREMENTAL improvement to the VCR.

Clearly spoken as someone who has never used a TiVo and has no clue what they do.

We're on opposite sides of this. My MMO of choice is Second Life, where standing around and chatting is what I do 95% of the time.

Aha, well. This explains everything you just said. Second life is not really a GAME, per se, it's a 3d chat room with flying penises and simulated sex. Which is cool, if you're into that sort of thing. But not exactly the same sort of MMO as CO* or WoW.

Only if you HAVE a spending limit. Many accounts do not.
