Submission + - Dell Ubuntu not for Consumers

jshriverWVU writes: "Dell doesn't sell Ubuntu n-series machines to consumers only businesses. Having a new job and going to school part time I thought I'd vote with my wallet and went online to order a Dell notebook with Ubuntu. After a while of declining a ton of extras (even windows software) I finally get to the order form. Then proceed to checkout only to be asked for a business ID or tax ID to make the purchase. Being an individual I found no way around this so I called Dell sales directly to see if I could order it that way. After 15 minutes on the phone I am told that I can't get the laptop as an individual and they are only sold to businesses. So without a business ID I couldn't get one. WTF?"
Sci-Fi

Submission + - 360-degree Holographic Display (engadget.com)

jshriverWVU writes: "Researchers at USC have taken another step towards that holiest of sci-fi dreams: the 3D holographic display. Using a spinning mirror covered with a "holographic diffuser," a special DVI implementation, and a high-speed projector, the team's device can project a three-dimensional image that can be viewed from 360 degrees — regardless of the viewer's height and distance. That's impressive, but that spinning mirror looks pretty dangerous. Check a video of the system in action after the break."
Sony

Submission + - Sony to release new PS2 (efluxmedia.com)

jshriverWVU writes: "In what might be a way to regain some turf in the console war Sony is releasing a revamped PS2 this winter season.

"Sony plans to attract casual and non-casual gamers with a Ceramic White limited edition of PlayStation 2, bundled with SingStar Pop, the second installment in the popular SingStar franchise. Of course, for wannabe artists that would be an incomplete package without the two high-quality USB microphones Sony plans to add to the promotional wrapping.""

Nintendo

Submission + - DLDI for Games N Music Released (drunkencoders.com)

jshriverWVU writes: Chishm the main developer of the dldi interface has released a driver for the Datel Games N Music device. Like other DS homebrew dev's I didnt want to buy a slot one card from some random place in Taiwan. The GnM, for better or worse, lets you play home brew on your DS and is available to anyone near a Best Buy. The only drawback till now is the lack of file system support. So if you needed to write or read files you were out of luck. Though with the new DLDI interface this is no longer a problem. This is great news as it'll open up the homebrew market even more for the DS as the average consumer can pick up this device and most homebrew will support it now.

Submission + - Vudu Casts Its Spell on Hollywood

jshriverWVU writes: Vudu Box The Vudu box looks like a nifty new device for buying digital media and viewing it on your TV. Here is a snipet from the article: Vudu, if all goes as planned, hopes to turn America's televisions into limitless multiplexes, providing instant gratification for movie buffs. It has built a small Internet-ready movie box that connects to the television and allows couch potatoes to rent or buy any of the 5,000 films now in Vudu's growing collection. The box's biggest asset is raw speed: the company says the films will begin playing immediately after a customer makes a selection.
