Comment Re:It's impossible (Score 1) 382

Hearing other viewpoints I consider very valuable. Sharing my view with others on the other hand seems quite pointless. It can feel good to have someone across the world agree with me, but that's about it. Of course it's good that not everyone thinks like I do, because there wouldn't be much to read or listen in that case.

As it happens, I generally listen and read a lot more than I speak or write.

There are no maturity requirements to run a company.

I'm not as optimistic as you are about his predictions. Just about every company seems to use Facebook nowadays, brick-and-mortar shops have images of Facebook's Like button on their windows, and plenty of job postings include Facebook links. Smaller companies don't even have their own web pages, they just use Facebook. I also wouldn't be sure that everybody even knows Facebook's internal messaging systems and e-mail are completely different animals. Messenger and ICQ were tiny compared to Facebook today. I don't use it myself, and don't want to sign up in order to apply for a job, but I'm afraid it's not implausible.

I guess it feels that way because smartphone operating systems are only supported for a short time. If Microsoft released new versions of Windows annually and ended support for old releases in a year or two, Windows 7 would be considered old too.

I wonder if smartphone operating systems will reach the "Windows XP spot" anytime soon. The devices themselves probably won't last ten years except for the most careful owners.

Even if that were true, it wouldn't be a GPL-only issue. Nobody who had ever written code for commercial use could ever change jobs again because they might accidentally copy something and their new employer would be in trouble.

Copyright law most probably isn't quite that insane... yet.

It's true that funky names are ubiquitous in the free software world, and I often wish developers came up with something better. But unhelpful names aren't limited to FOSS. What about pictures of one's baby or young kid nude, is it illegal to send such images to the kids grandparents for example? It can be very hard to tell from just a picture whether abuse took place or not. Sometimes it's clear, and I hope the victims get all the help they need. But in other cases, would these automated systems mark the images as "child abuse" and get the parents in trouble? The topic is so heated that even slight suspicions can lead to big problems.
