Hey, they got Bin Laden through his courier. All they need is a bit of intelligence from this guy (I know, "lulz" and "intelligence" don't exactly go together), and they can get pretty far.

They got all the intelligence they will need from this guy when they got an image of his disks. Disks will know more than any puppet.

Just because you catch a handful of the people who can exploit these systems because those systems are so easy to exploit does not fix the problem.

Yeah, that would be an ideal world (wakey wakey.) IRL, credit card companies haven't improved CC security because it is cheaper and easier to catch fraudulent persons and to compensate losses than to improve cards to be "beyond hackable". Same principle applies here - it's easier to catch and hang few perpetrators than to patch all CMSes around the globe. Note that i am just observing what goes on IRL, that does not necessarily mean i wouldn't rather live in that ideal, fair(y) world.

Comment google is so yesterday, anyways (Score 1) 158

a bit unrelated to the original post, but I've switched to duckduckgo as my primary search engine a while ago. To name just a few perks: - search results point to https pages first, if there are any, - you can search with ! (bang) whatever you want - !youtube or !images - you get to any linux man page with !man keyword - duckduckgo does NOT profile your ass to eternity and back Google is so yesterday and obsolete.

Comment Melissa again? (Score 1) 68

Wasn't it the writer of Melissa that has had original intent of searching for other virii and removing them? I am no cracker, but from what I know AV software is common initial target of any decent virus; why would ants be immune to such attacks and who could guarantee that they are impermeable? This scenario sounds more like "once you get infected, can't get help by being insected" or whatever. Adding more possible holes that have mind of their own isn't really a security way to go...

Comment well, finally (Score 2) 210

Well, finally there is a concise word someone whom we can trust more than we can trust others in the field, and they took their time to clarify information and to teach public. Their contribution is enormous and one can always learn from them, no matter how strong one's own expertise is. I listened to rms last year in Sarajevo, he is certainly authoritative in that field and also promotes very same goals that were my own reasons to get involved with IT in the first place. I, for one, would always back Mr. Stallman's views, opinions and teaching; rather than some Andrea Kempe or D. Brewer who spam my inbox on regular basis. It is very important to spread the word on the copyright and issues behind it; it is crucial for civilization's development and growth.

Where did that information come from? I live in Poland and I'm pretty sure FOSS isn't almost used at all on governmental boxes. I used to work for a governmental agency and never saw anything but Windows.

I've been reading about Polish govt accepting FOSS for long time now, it's easy to look it up on the web: http://www.osor.eu/news/pl-ninety-percent-op-public-administrations-use-open-source There are more sources, however, I have no "hands-on" knowledge nor I ever worked for Polish govt. to be able to deny or confirm those claims. If I mislead someone it was not intentional.

Comment bridge it over with some govmnt agency (Score 1) 836

Hi, If you are not looking into Western Europe only, my warmest suggestion is that you look for the job abroad with US Government. There are so many projects that come through USAID and are trying to better people's lives around developing European countries. Advantages of such move are: You are making decent money according to US and great money according to local standards, that will enable you to bridge over period where you will learn and get used to local customs, learn some language, and be able to look for more work - either with local or with international companies. There are lots of IT related projects and almost anything (from bettering legislature and economics to the local administration development projects) does have an IT component in itself and needs an IT expert. You would be working in an American-style environment yet living abroad. Once you get more first-hand information, you can look for the local jobs - all of those places are in development and in chronic need for IT people. All the best!
