Submission + - Valve starts blocking international Orange Boxes (consumerist.com)

Ariastis writes: Valve Software, makes of Half-Life 2, portal & al, has now taken the direction by many reviled companies by deactivating legitimate copies of the Orange Box imported by users from outside the country. No preemptive warning was given and gamers are angry. Guess one more company we used to love has now sided with the "we'll wring all the cash out of you" side.

Submission + - Madonna joins others in dropping Recording Labels (techcrunch.com) 1

Ariastis writes: Following the leads of Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Oasis and Jamiroquai, it is now Madonna's turn to drop the record labels. She has now signed with Live Nation, an independant concert promotion company, to the tune of 120 MIL$ to distribute three studio albums, promote concert tours, sell merchandise and license Madonna's name. While she isn't selling music directly to the end-users like NIN & al. it still shows a growing trend where artists are finally ditching the big record labels in favor of more client-centered distribution mechanisms.

Submission + - Artists finally start ditching the record labels!

Ariastis writes: In the last few days, Trent Reznor (NIN), Radio head, possibly Oasis and Jamiroquai and some others are finally sticking up to the greedy Record Labels. They have all started to distribute (or are thinking about it) their music independently, refusing to deal with the greedy old bastards who try to smother their fans. All downloads are DRM-Free, and RadioHead even allows their fans to set the price of the stuff they download!

Submission + - Microsoft caught using pirated software in XP (urbandictionary.com) 2

Ariastis writes: Microsoft have been bust yet again. They have been using a cracked version of Sound Forge to create files that are inside the Windows Tour folder. (Tested on XP) Reading the lat bits of the file in Notepad reveals the cracker info. These files have been made with Sound Forge 4.5 (The cracked version) first cracked by a cracker called "Deepz0ne".

Submission + - EVe-Online : CCP corruption exposed, again!

Ariastis writes: An open letter, posted by former EVE Players, once again exposes the dark undersides of the EVE MMORPG. In it, chat logs & event timelines, along with description of in-game events from CCP-Approved reporting users, describe how most of the big events are rigged to favor specific alliances & players by CCP. CCP reaction is member-only, but a forum thread has been left open to discuss about it.

Submission + - Rep. block cineast from proving war profiteering

Ariastis writes: "Progressive film director Robert Greenwald is scheduled to testify at a hearing on Thursday, May 10 about war profiteering. He requested to show a few minutes of one of his films, showing testimonies from soldiers, contractors, mechanics, etc. which all convey the same message : The Iraq war is big business for companies who rip off the American taxpayers. Republicans blocked the video from being show to congress."

Submission + - RIAA Balks at Complying with Order for Documents

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes: "When the RIAA was ordered to turn over its attorneys billing records to the defendant's lawyer in Capitol v. Foster, there was a lot of speculation that they would never comply with the order. As it turns out they have indeed balked at compliance with the order, saying that they are preparing a motion for protective order seeking confidentiality (something they could have asked for, but didn't ask for, in their opposition papers to the initial motion). Not having any of that, Ms. Foster's lawyer has now made a motion to compel their compliance with the Court's March 15th order."
