storagedude writes "Access to data isn't keeping pace with advances in CPU and memory, creating an I/O bottleneck that threatens to make data storage irrelevant. The author sees phase change memory as a technology that could unseat storage networks. From the article: 'While years away, PCM has the potential to move data storage and storage networks from the center of data centers to the periphery. I/O would only have to be conducted at the start and end of the day, with data parked in memory while applications are running. In short, disk becomes the new tape."

Super-Earths Discovered Orbiting Nearby, Sun-Like Star 242

likuidkewl writes "Two super-earths, 5 and 7.5 times the size of our home, were found to be orbiting 61 Virginis a mere 28 light years away. 'These detections indicate that low-mass planets are quite common around nearby stars. The discovery of potentially habitable nearby worlds may be just a few years away,' said Steven Vogt, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UCSC. Among hundreds of our nearest stellar neighbors, 61 Vir stands out as being the most nearly similar to the Sun in terms of age, mass, and other essential properties."

New Zealand To Launch First Private Space Rocket 96

RobGoldsmith sends in a Space Fellowship piece (which seems to be a press release) about New Zealand's entry into the space age. "Private New Zealand aerospace company Rocket Lab completed its final ground-based test today and is now ready to launch New Zealand into the space race with its Atea-1 launch vehicle. The first high-altitude launch of Atea-1 is scheduled for the end of November this year. Once Atea-1 has successfully concluded the development phase it will be the first privately built rocket launched from the Southern Hemisphere to enter space. The article features a new CGI movie on the launch."

I'm right-handed and not deaf, but I also hold up the phone to my left ear, but because I hear better with it and thus am able to listen better with it. Also, when I'm wearing headphones and hearing music and I actually want to listen to what someone has to say, I take off the left headphone so I can pay attention better.

I also prefer my left eye; I wear contacts and have a harder time seeing when I'm wearing only the right-eye contact.

So it's also more like the usual right- or left-handedness in that you're better suited to do certain tasks with a particular side.

Sadly no mod points at the moment, but I want to say not only how true this can be, but that it can also depend heavily on the circumstances.

I started on a new job just yesterday after months of searching. And what happens? When going with my boss to one of our client's offices we got pulled over. The officer was in the right, but my boss thought we could not miss the meeting and bribed the cop.

Now, what to do? Do you choose your own ideals and morals, missing that meeting and possibly starting off giving your boss a headache and who knows what other difficulties down the road, but staying with a clean conscience of doing what's right? Or just suck it up and go with the flow because you just got that job you were desperately needing for a while now?
