Lazbien writes: CBC reports that Canadian business are now being charged to have background music playing within their establishments. "The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) has sent out notices to hair salons across the country, urging them to pay a licensing fee or face legal action." This is not the first time that SOCAN has attempted to collect royalties from small businesses. SOCAN's website states they are not-for-profit.
