Baseclass writes: I have a programming degree, I'm fluent in at least a dozen languages, I've worked in information security, been a UNIX/Linux admin, and a programmer which is the post I currently hold.
I've been working in corporate America for ~13 years but I just can't deal with red tape and politics any longer.
Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely love kicking out code and having my way with UNIX boxes, that is how I spend my free time after all.
It's just that the structured corporate environment has grown tiresome.
Here's an example: We recently had a misbehaving program in production. After about 15 seconds of troubleshooting I tracked the problem down to a missing semi-colon. Simple right? Wrong! I can't just log on to a production box and change code, I had to submit the changes to Harvest, deploy it to the test environment, test it, get the approval of the environment owner, 2 levels of management, and write of a 10 page report detailing my changes and test results before promoting it through 6 more environments. It literally took me 2 weeks to apply a change that should have taken less than 1 minute.
Sometimes I just want to leave it all behind and become a folk singer or a park ranger or something but I've got bills to pay. Starting my own business is far too risky, I have a family to support.
I guess I'm wondering how life is working for a small tech company compared to a fortune 100.
