Submission + - Fetal Activity Monitor Sends Baby Kicks to Twitter (inhabitots.com)

JulieK writes: When pregnant moms wear the Kickbee, the Twittering fetal activity monitor, and her baby kicks, the device sends an update to Twitter or Dad's iPhone announcing, "I kicked Mommy!" Corey Menscher, a NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program grad, invented the stretchy belly band with vibration sensors inside to connect parents separated during pregnancy. A microcontroller in the Kickbee, transmits the signals wirelessly to a computer program and then to Twitter or text message.

Submission + - NOAA Announces Warmest Year-to-Date on Record (noaa.gov) 1

eldavojohn writes: "So far, it's been a scorcher for folks all around the world. So it might come as no surprise that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released a report revealing 2010 having the record for warmest June, warmest April to June and warmest year to date. The announcement said 'Each of the 10 warmest average global temperatures recorded since 1880 have occurred in the last fifteen years. The warmest year-to-date on record, through June, was 1998, and 2010 is warmer so far.' So far we are even surpassing 1998's records which held the warmest year (despite directly contradicting reports). It certainly seems the scads of winter precipitation we enjoyed was no indication of how we would swelter through our summer this year. Will 2010 turn it around or are we set to break more records?"

Submission + - How To - Gaugue LAMP competency

An anonymous reader writes: Our company is getting ready to hire a number of programmers and while the majority of the prospective candidates do have good looking resumes we are looking to see if we can get some clear metrics in the assessment process. After doing some research it does seem that PHP and MySQL do have a well established training and certification process and some of the candidates are already certified. There is also the candidate with a good portfolio, a lot of experience and no certification. Most of the applicants also have some college/university science related education.
So our goal is to be able to somehow measure LAMP overall competency as well as basic computer science concepts such as BNF, Data normalization, OOP, MVC etc. How do Slashdot readers go about this ?

Submission + - Dutch can ban foreigners from coffeeshops

mernil writes: The Dutch border town of Maastricht is within its rights to ban foreigners from its marijuana coffeeshops, Europe's top court has said.

While the very foundation of the European Union is the free movement of people, meaning a country cannot forbid citizens of another EU state from doing something its own citizens are allowed to do, this does not apply to getting off your face on White Widow, according to the finding of an advocate-general with the European Court of Justice.
