Today, Mozilla released Thunderbird 3 to the world after quite a long time of development! Many new features are now available, including Tabs and enhanced search features, a "message archive" for emails you don't want to delete but still want to keep, Firefox 3's improved Add-ons Manager, Personas support, and many other improvements.

Google Wants to Map Indoors, Too 174

An anonymous reader writes "Google maps are getting extended indoors next month with a new app called Micello that takes over where conventional navigators leave off — mapping your route inside of buildings, malls, convention centers and other points of interest. You don't get a 'you are here' blinking dot yet — but they do promise to add one next year using WiFi triangulation. At the introduction next month, Micello will only work in California, but they plan to expand to other major US cities during 2010."

More than just a graphics processor, Fermi incorporates many enhancements targeted specifically at general-purpose computing, such as better support for double-precision math, improved internal scheduling and switching, and more robust tools for developers. Plus, you know, more cores. Some questions about the chip remain unanswered, but it's not expected to arrive until later this year or early next."

As someone that had to replace the connection on two different laptops, I find this to be very well worth it. Better than Apple's 'magnetic connection'. In addition Dell's new pc includes an instant on capability that is basically a second mini-motherboard that does not run windows. It lets you do do email and web surfing at low power — greatly extending the battery life."

NVidia Cripples PhysX "Open" API 393

An anonymous reader writes "In a foot-meet-bullet type move, NVidia is going to disable PhysX engine if you are using a display adapter other than one that came from their company. This despite the fact that you may have an NVidia card on your system specifically to do this type of processing. 'For a variety of reasons some development expense, some quality assurance and some business reasons Nvidia will not support GPU accelerated PhysX with Nvidia GPUs while GPU rendering is happening on non-Nvidia GPUs.' Time to say hello to Microsoft dx physics or Intel's Havok engine."

There's no hate, just a matter of time. From http://source.android.com/projects/bluetooth-faq: "Q. When will Java Bluetooth API's be released in an SDK? A. We are not ready to announce a release target for Bluetooth API's. We do understand there is demand for a Bluetooth API, and it is a top priority for the Android Bluetooth team."

If you're that afraid you'll loose to competition, than you'd better not open source your code. But, really now, suppose that a new business wants to compete with you by using your own code. This means they'll have to 1. Understand the market 2. Hire/Use existing developers to understand the code and be able to create new features 3. Spend a lot of money to create a competitive brand (Hey, this shiny new thingie i've created for you is the best, and you shouldn't go to those guys i've copied from and know what they're doing) 4. Make sure those code better and faster than yours Leaving all this aside, have you ever seen this in action?

mjasay writes "While the GPL powers as much as 77% of all SourceForge projects, Eric Raymond argues that the GPL is 'a confession of fear and weakness' that 'slows down open-source adoption' because of the fear and uncertainty the GPL provokes. Raymond's argument seems to be that if openness is the winning strategy, an argument Michael Tiemann advocates, wouldn't it make sense to use the most open license? Geir Magnusson of the Apache Software Foundation suggests that there are few 'pure' GPL-only open-source projects, as GPL-prone developers have to 'modify it in some way to get around the enforcement of Freedom(SM) in GPL so people can use the project.' But the real benefit of Apache-style licensing may not be for developers at all, and rather accrue to businesses hoping to drive adoption of their products: Apache licensing may encourage broader, deeper adoption than the GPL. The old GPL vs. BSD/Apache debate may not be about developer preferences so much as new business realities."
