From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axiom:

"In traditional logic, an axiom or postulate is a proposition that is not proved or demonstrated but considered to be either self-evident, or subject to necessary decision. That is to say, an axiom is a logical statement that is assumed to be true."

There is no such thing as a provably true axiom, strictly speaking.

"on the order of 1000 hours"
Very interesting figure, is it not? From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoebus_cartel: "The cartel served as a convenient way to lower costs and took on considerable efforts to cap the life expectancy of light bulbs at 1000 hours" (citation)
It might be argued that bulbs manufactured before that (such as the Centennial) could have been expected to last longer.
Mars

Submission + - Mars500 volunters about to 'land' on Mars

mvar writes: A group of volunteers will reach a key stage in an unprecedented one-and-a-half year virtual interplanetary flight experiment to study the effects of a mission to Mars when they ‘land’ on the Red Planet's surface. Three of the six volunteers in the Mars500 experiment will ‘touch down’ after 244 days of virtual flight before moving out of their lander for a first ‘space walk’ on the Martian surface — all without leaving a Moscow research centre. The landing marks the approximate halfway point for the experiment in which the participants must spend 520 days in isolation from the world to test how humans would respond to the pressures of the long voyage to Mars.

angry tapir writes: YouTube is working with LG to make it easier for users to capture 3D images and video on mobile devices and upload directly to the Internet with LG's new Optimus 3D smartphone. The Optimus 3D, which uses Google's Android mobile operating system, features a dual-lens camera for 3D image and video capture. That video can be directly uploaded to YouTube via a dedicated YouTube 3D video application.
NASA

Submission + - Infertility could impede human space colonization (independent.co.uk)

intellitech writes: The prospect of long-term space travel has led scientists to consider, increasingly seriously, the following conundrum: if travelling to a new home might take thousands of years, would humans be able to successfully procreate along the way? The early indications from NASA are not encouraging. Space, it seems, is simply not a good place to have sex.
Facebook

Submission + - Saudi students in US seek segregation on Facebook (arabnews.com)

Beetle B. writes: A 22,000-member group for Saudis studying in the US on the social networking website Facebook has been split into two groups, one for women and one for men. The split follows a request from the group's female members who wanted extra privacy.

'The separate page for Saudi women is a valid decision. We took it to fulfill the wishes of the Saudi women in the US. We have been contacted by a lot of women asking for their private group,' Majed Aleid, media chair of the 'Saudis in the US' group, told Arab News in a letter.

HP

Submission + - Recent HP Laptops shipped CPU-Choking WiFi Driver (superuser.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Computer manufacturers have recently come under fire for the continued practice of shipping machines with excessive bloatware. Software preinstalled on some recent HP laptops was worse than normal though, consuming anywhere from 25-99% CPU by making incessant WMI queries, resulting in overheating laptops and reduced battery life. Users on a computer Q&A site did some sleuthing, and revealed that HP Wireless Assistant — software which does nothing but tell the user when their WiFi adapter is turned on or off — was causing the problem. According to an HP support forum, the problem is fixed in later versions, but thousands of laptops have the software installed, and the software does not get updated automatically.
