Its coming -its like the early days of dialup when you paid £15 month for 56K and were happy. Then came ISDN, ADSL and fibre and now £15 month can get you 8MB+ (if close to the right exchange). 3G in mertro areas, EDGE is being deployed, followed by HSDPA - as the rates increase the telco's will look for the differentiator and the prices will fall.

Submission + - EPA likely to block tougher pollution standards

HairyNevus writes: "Starting with California, 11 other states have adopted tougher CO2 emission standards than the federal government regulates. The new state laws require automakers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 22% in 2012 and 30% in 2016. 2 days ago a Vermont court allowed this law to go into effect. However, the EPA requires that all states who set tougher standards than the government receive a waiver. This generally isn't a problem, the EPA has issued 40 waivers in the last 30 years, but state officials in Washington are now saying the EPA is likely to refuse a waiver. EPA Administrator Steve Johnson will make the final decision on the waiver by the end of this year, for California. Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he intends to sue if denied a waiver.

Isn't there an issue of state's rights somewhere here?"

Submission + - German police arrest admin of Tor anonymity server (cnet.com)

An anonymous reader writes: In a recent blog posting, a German operator of a Tor anonymous proxy server revealed that he was arrested by German police officers at the end of July. Showing up at his house at midnight on a Sunday night, police cuffed and arrested him in front of his wife and seized his equipment. In a display of both bitter irony and incompetence, the police did not take or shut-down the Tor server responsible for the traffic they were interested in, which was located in a data center, over 500km away. In the last year, Germany has passed a draconian new anti-security research law and raided seven different data centers to seize Tor servers. While back in 2003, A German court ordered the developers of a different anonymity network to build a back-door into their system. CNET's article has the full details.

Submission + - PC's 'Jade Empire' delivers solid game (canoe.ca)

Raver32 writes: "It took almost two years but "Jade Empire" has finally made it from the Xbox to the PC. It's worth the wait for gamers who missed the original, but those familiar with the console version of BioWare's martial arts epic will wonder why there was such a long wait for so little extra content. The strong points of the original are intact in the PC version. Edmonton's BioWare have always had a knack for crafting games with engaging characters and epic storylines, and "Jade Empire" (rated M for mature) is no different. The characters and landscape are beautifully rendered, especially when played in a high resolution, and the characters and story are engrossing."

Submission + - Nintendo opens up the Wii (theglobeandmail.com)

Raver32 writes: "Nintendo Co. has opened its blockbuster Wii game system to independent video-game developers for the first time, the company announced Wednesday. Nintendo said it will let individuals and outside game studios create and sell downloadable Wii games with a tool called WiiWare. Gamers will be able to purchase the games through the console's Wii Shop channel starting in early 2008. Perrin Kaplan, a Nintendo spokeswoman, said the game-creation kit is designed for people with at least some knowledge of computer programming. Developers can start designing games using a PC but must complete them on the Wii console, Kaplan said. "Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, in a statement."

Submission + - UK Announces Criminalisation of "Extreme Porn&

An anonymous reader writes: The UK Government has published plans to criminalise possession of "extreme pornography". The law would apply whether the images showed real or simulated violence, and would cover private images of acts between consenting partners. The law would also apply to screenshots taken from a legal film, if the screenshot was made for erotic purposes. The law forms part of the Criminal Justice and Immigration bill.

The bill has been promoted by groups such as mediawatch-uk. Backlash opposes the law. This bill follows from plans initially announced last August.
