Comment Hmm, this is basically true of all android 3.0 (Score 1) 381

Iphone had hardware acceleration since launch. Android finally got it with honeycomb but the app developer had to invoke it to use it. From what I've read ice cream sandwich has it enabled for all apps. Finally. Like just under the wire of 2012 finally whereas iphone had this in 2007. Yes Iphone is just one hardware platform which makes things easier but still. Android should have had this a long time ago.

So unless it has a monster cpu you're not getting a smooth as glass experience on ANY android phone/tablet that's gingerbread or earlier.

Comment Doesn't it have to be non-trivial/non-obvious?! (Score 3, Insightful) 622

I thought the two main criteria for a patent are: It hasn't been done before (prior art) and it's non-trivial. Like as in holy crap! What you just made there is awesome!! Please patent how you did this so society at large benefits from this and it is never lost!!

I don't think a swipe to start using a touch interface qualifies...

Comment Re:I took a look at ICS last night (Score 1) 309

It doesn't sound like your apps need it but there's not much mention of hardware acceleration, which I'm probably more excited about that than other new features. It's not about eye candy, but touch displays typically have menus and icons moving around so responsiveness matters.

I'm hoping it will be relatively easy for developers to take advantage of this for current apps.

Why isn't multi-user support not more important? Maybe not so much in phones, but definitely tablets. If I am at my bro's and my nephew wants to play angry birds on my tablet, I should be able to hand it to him with confidence that he can't see my emails etc. And maybe a limited user (guest) account that can't install/uninstall stuff etc. Why does it have to be like win98 again?!

Comment What about acute short-term stress? (Score 1) 173

I had life circumstances that stressed me beyond belief. I'm talking 24/7 constant worry and dread to extremes I've never felt in my life for over 2 months straight. Shortly after I noticed I started balding and I've always had a full head of hair. Yes, it could be just a coincidence but I've read there is such a thing as stress related baldness and if it's short-term hair will usually return. Also, this stressful episode of my life is over but I feel entirely burnt-out as a result.

I exercise and try and eat right, and I can still do my workouts and feel good while working out, but outside of that I feel I have energy for just about nothing. I've read about adrenal fatigue and it sounds like what I have but I've read this is not a recognized medical condition thus there is no treatment.

They say stress ages the body, well if true I feel like I aged a year in a span of a month. It was absolutely horrible. Anyway, I feel like a shell of my former self and I'm concerned I'm not going to bounce back.

Comment Re:So I get three more years... (Score 2) 249

How do you only get more of your last years? You will be healthier in your middle years. I'm 41, I'm certainly not a top athlete, but I can run 20-30 minutes easily, I'm stronger than I have ever been with weight-training, look great and have lots of energy. Compared to my 40 something counter-parts, I look almost 10 years younger. Yes, genetics plays a big part as well, but if I never did any of this, I wouldn't like to imagine how I'd look and feel.

Personally, I think sitting on your ass is a killer, but hey to each his own I guess.

Comment So is this a buy? (Score 1) 245

Just curious what people think. You might be skeptical of the business model but I'm thinking more in the short-term. For ex, google hit their peak stock wise in about a year & 1/2 and it's just been up and down since. I noticed this with a lot of them, that you want to get in early, and leave when the timing is right. Yeah I know, easier said that done.

So I'm just wondering what people think of the business as an investment. I wonder what price an average joe will be able to buy in at. I believe google used a dutch ipo model that actually made it possible for an average person to buy in at the ipo price and not some inflated after-market price.

8-Year-Olds Publish Scientific Bee Study 174

flintmecha writes "A group of British schoolchildren may be the youngest scientists ever to have their work published in a peer-reviewed journal. In a new paper in Biology Letters, children from Blackawton Primary School report that buff-tailed bumblebees can learn to recognize nourishing flowers based on colors and patterns. The paper itself is well worth reading. It's written entirely in the kids' voices, complete with sound effects (part of the Methods section is subtitled, ''the puzzle'duh duh duuuhhh') and figures drawn by hand in colored pencil."

Fermilab To Test Holographic Universe Theory 166

eldavojohn writes "Scientists at Fermilab have decided that it's high time they build a 'holometer' to test the smoothness of space-time. Theoretical physicists like Stephen Hawking have proposed that space-time is not smooth but it's been a lot of math and no actual data. The Fermilab team plans to build two relatively small devices that act as 'holographic interferometers' to measure the shaking or vibration in split beams of light traveling through a vacuum. If the team finds the shaking in their measurements and records them, the theory of a holographic universe will have some evidence of non-smoothness in space-time and perhaps a foothold in bringing light to the heavily debated theoretical physics."
