Submission + - Dice Ruins Slashdot (slashdot.org) 12

An anonymous reader writes: In an attempt to modernize Slashdot, Dice has removed everything that made Slashdot unique and worthwhile and has turned it into a generic blog site. User feedback has been unanimously negative, but this is to no avail, and users will have to head elsewhere for insightful and entertaining commentary on tech news.

Yeah, yeah, I know... Don't feed the trolls... but...

Were 35 years in jail an even-remotely-appropriate penalty for what essentially amounts to trespassing and/or mischief, I'd be with you. Him being "held responsible" should have amounted to something like 30 days in jail and a small fine, not a good chunk of his life in prison.

Stop blaming an individual, when the real problem is the adversarial system.

No. Fuck that.

I'm tired of the sentiment that the system is to blame, or "don't hate the player, hate the game". At some point, an individual made the decision to do this. They checked their morals at the door, and decided to abuse their authority for their own personal gain.

While the system is set up to reward that behaviour, it doesn't change the fact that Carmen M Ortiz chose to do this. At some point, we need to hold people who make decisions like this, whether or not the system encourages them to, responsible, and hold them up as the immoral SOBs that they are.

If we don't, the system will never change.

Maybe it should cause a fatal error because the input did not meet the criteria, would that be better?

Yes, it would be. Silently failing is one of PHP's most common and egregious sins. I'd rather it fail and fail loudly, so bugs like this can get fixed during development.

H.R. Giger Returns To the Alien Franchise 144

An anonymous reader writes "Great news for Alien franchise purists, as conceptual artist H.R. Giger has been confirmed as a contributor to the prequel that Ridley Scott is set to begin shooting in February. The originator of the 'xenomorph' design, Giger was left out of James Cameron's Aliens (1986), since Cameron only needed a new 'Alien queen' design, and had come up with that himself. This article features the Swiss TV broadcast where Giger's wife broke the news, and a full gallery of Giger's conceptual work for Alien."

Submission + - U.S Government Seizes Torrent Search Engine Domain (torrentfreak.com)

Voulnet writes: This morning, visitors to the Torrent-Finder.com site are greeted with an ominous graphic which indicates that ICE have seized the site’s domain.
“My domain has been seized without any previous complaint or notice from any court!” the exasperated owner of Torrent-Finder told TorrentFreak this morning.

“I firstly had DNS downtime. While I was contacting GoDaddy I noticed the DNS had changed. Godaddy had no idea what was going on and until now they do not understand the situation and they say it was totally from ICANN,” he explained.

Aside from the fact that domains are being seized seemingly at will, there is a very serious problem with the action against Torrent-Finder. Not only does the site not host or even link to any torrents whatsoever, it actually only returns searches through embedded iframes which display other sites that are not under the control of the Torrent-Finder owner.

Yes, they do.

I was contacted by Google solely through my website (which I hadn't updated in about 3 years). Still, they'd found it, using a pretty funky search, and then they emailed me asking if I would like to be interviewed.

As a further indictment of HR drones :-), I aced the technical interviews (including several by phone and about 4 or 5 back-to-back technical interviews onsite), but then they mysteriously "had no projects that matched my skill set" once everything got to HR.
