Although the multi billion dollar price tags often dragged out and pilloried are rather inflated (see 'Hollywood accounting') it is expensive to develop - and test - a new drug. The NIH certainly has the ability to organize the testing, various biochem labs or even start ups can do the development. I'm pretty sure that there are European groups that can help out at various stages.

India, Israel and a bunch on non US companies have shown they can manufacture the pharmaceuticals.

You don't need big Pharma at all. You need the FDA to be able to license foreign drugs, you need the NIH and perhaps some other federal agencies to coordinate activities with other countries. You can cross license patents.

You know, cooperate. It's a big planet.

But most of all the US Federal Government needs some balls. They have to be able to rise above the current kleptocracy and do something right for a change.

Bah, may as well ask for a Pony.

If you are an American, I can understand this sentiment completely. Given the lack of affordable health care, especially psychiatric care (do you have "Poor Impulse Control" tattooed on your forehead?), the penal system is perhaps the best option for getting the help that you clearly need.

Recently, I saw a picture of a diamond-encrusted Apple watch band / case. I'm sure there will be a market for third parties, catering to people with more money than either common sense or fashion sense to 'improve' their smart watch in one way or the other.

Now that nobody has a 'classical' style computer, case modders have to go somewhere.

The Democrats used voodoo to come up with Obamacare. What's the difference?

Voodoo involves sticking pins through a simulacrum of your nemesis. Sticking giant pins through Republicans can certainly be seen as something contributing to the greater good - at the very least it is quite cathartic.

And catharsis is a powerful healing tool.

I think the median deviation of those that peruse Slashdot are a few standards higher than governmental officials, but not so sure about IQ.

Anyone going into Pakistan (or any other foreign country) would need a visa (and probably a Visa). So the government would have ample opportunity to set up tracking / notification / surveillance or whatever they deem appropriate. Killing or kidnapping foreigners for a SIM card seems a bit overwrought as other Slashdotters have quickly discovered several other loopholes (give a random kid $20, kid gets cell phone, kid disappears into the slums .... )

I doubt this will be terribly useful but it might help track phones to some extent.
