Yeah, we have that problem too. But those systems are air gapped. We even have a system running Win 3.11. But it works just fine.

It's not the planning, it's the expense. When upgrading to new hardware means dropping $20k for new software licenses (for one PC), and the expense comes out of your own pocket, you "plan" to use the system for as long as possible.

Decade to plan. Yeah. Whatever.

Yeah, unless you've got thousands of dollars of software that are locked to that PC configuration (hardware and software). Then you're looking at a major expense and hassle of upgrading everything just to do exactly what you were before.

Those people can be rejected by pointing out the links are now newsworthy and relevant because they were the first to request take-downs.

Not quite true. I've made a few parts with a Makerbot. Mostly custom idler gears to see if it could work. Nothing exciting, but they work perfectly.

The trick was post processing. Instead of an X shaped axle hole, I made a round hole. Then used a drill bit to clean it out to a fairly precise diameter.

But haven't been motivated to do much more than that. The same process would work perfect for making joined gears, but again I haven't been too motivated.

It might come as a surprise to you, but the vast majority of technology is not electronic. Medicine, for example.

Unless you visit your local shaman for healthcare, there is probably quite a bit of technology involved.

I've got a DOS machine behind me that we use frequently. Need it to run special software that runs ISA boards. Couldn't be easier to maintain. My only fear is the motherboard dying and having to find a PC with ISA bus.
