Comment Diesel's can do that (Score 1) 1184

I think this is a job for Diesel's. MY VW passat does better than 54.5US gallons when in the hwy. My friend has a ford fiesta diesel that gets even better mileage around 70mpg (US gallons). And I am sure a diesel hybrid should be even better. I can't go back to driving gasoline autos. The torque in a diesel vehicle is just awesome. Trident is coming out with a diesel sports car that will do 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds and a fuel economy of 57.4mpg and that car's engine is built by GM.

VNC work different than X. With VNC you have to display the whole desktop, and with the xserver you have the choice of only displaying the app you need to run. I think windows just added this feature in their windows 2008 server and call it remote app. And I love this I got old computers that can't run some programs so I just made a shorcut to just run the one app via xserver, and you can't even tell the difference since to the client it feels like a local program.

The Death of Booting Up 557

theodp writes "'Booting up was a bear,' recalls Slate's Farhad Manjoo, 'something to be avoided at all costs.' But now, he adds, 'It's time to rejoice, because all that's in the past. Computers these days can go from completely off to working within 30 seconds, and in some cases much faster. Apple's MacBook Air loads up in 16 seconds, and machines based on Google's cloud-based Chrome OS boast boot times of under 10 seconds. Even Windows computers are fast — with the right set-up, your Windows 7 laptop can load just as quickly as a MacBook.' Perhaps at home, but how's that working out for you at work? Have reports of the death of long boot times been greatly exaggerated?"

if you want to run old programs all you need to grab everysingle library that program depends on. I have managed to run old applications using portablelinuxapps There was also a story here in slashdot of another program that allowed you to grab all the dependencies of an old program to run in modern distributions but I couldn't find the story.

There are many ways of producing hydrogen, and probably many more ways that we haven't figure out. A lot of times is a byproduct of some other process. Do you remember the blow up in the japanese nuclear reactors? those happen because of hydrogen build up, and I think using nuclear power to produce hydrogen is actually very green. I used to work for Arco(BP) and during the refining process we used to produce way too much hydrogen and we didn't have where to store or no one to sell it to so we would just burn it, and we would do this almost 24/7. And right now most of the hydrogen in the USA is produced by steam reforming of natural gas

Hydrogen is NOT green - not until they find a "green" way to produce it. It is NOT an energy SOURCE (like fossil fuels, and nuclear), it is an energy CONVEYOR. I wanna save the planet as much as anyone, but as long as fossile fuels are used to generate the hydrogen, it actually makes more sense to just burn the stuff in an internal cumbustion engine. /me waits to get modded down :-/
