I had my phone setup to auto connect to wifi, but there is a lot of wifi out there that looks open and free to my phone, only it takes you to a page where you have to log in. Peets coffe, most hotels.

When I hit one of these, it sort of grinds everything to a halt, as the phone thinks it has a wi-fi connection but does not.

German Photog Wants to Shoot Buildings Excluded From Street View 327

crf00 writes with this report excerpted from Blogoscoped: "'Spiegel reports that German photographer and IT consultant Jens Best wants to personally take snapshots of all those (German) buildings which people asked Google Street View to remove. He then wants to add those photos to Picasa, including GPS coordinates, and in turn re-connect them with Google Maps. Jens believes that for the internet 'we must apply the same rules as we do in the real world. Our right to take panoramic snapshots, for instance, or to take photographs in public spaces, both base laws which determine that one may photograph those things that are visible from public streets and places.' Jens says that for his belief in the right of photographing in public places, as last resort he's even willing to go to jail. Spiegel says Jens already found over 200 people who want to help out in this project and look for removed locations in Google Street View, as there's no official list of such places published by Google."

Submission + - Researchers Create Artificial Spider Silk Spinner (sciencedaily.com)

alex_guy_CA writes: "Scientists have been investigating how to mimic spider silk for years. The seemingly delicate threads actually have a tensile strength five times greater than steel, and the possibilities for using a similar material in everything from buildings to bridges to cars and even clothing, are practically infinite. The only problem is, the stuff seems to be impossible to replicate. However, researchers have uncovered a key aspect in how spiders make silk, and they may be one step closer to man-made spider silk.

According to Science Daily, scientists from the Technische Universitaet Muenchen and the University of Bayreuth have solved the question of how spiders form long, stable, elastic fibers from the proteins stored in their silk glands in seconds. The spider silk is comprised of protein chains linked with stable physical connections, and between these are unlinked areas that contribute to the elasticity — making the silk both strong and flexible. But the mystery behind the molecules are what allows them to be stored in close confinement inside the silk gland without linking up and clumping. The scientists were able to figure out the structure of a control element used in the formation of the spider silk, and now they may be able to soon replicate the way spiders form silk. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/05/100512131511.htm"

I have taken over 10,000 photos because as a photographer I get paid to do so. I photograph a lot of weddings and events. It a typical 6 hour event, I will shoot over 1,200 photos. A portrait session will be about 300 photos. If I'm doing an art project, I'll shoot about 200 photos. These add up over the year, though truth be told, since the econo-collapse my bookings have gone down a lot. When people were spending lots of fictional home equity I was shooting two to three weddings every week. Now I get that many in a month, but still more than enough jobs in a year to push me over 10,000. http://www.schoenfeldt.com/ and http://www.schoenfeldt.com/blog
