KDE 4.0 Beta 1 Released 249

dbhost writes "Along with this morning's cup of coffee and log reviews, I discovered that the KDE team is moving forward with a long awaited beta release of KDE 4.0 beta release of KDE 4.0. The most interesting item I found in the notes is that the file manager in KDE is being separated from Konqueror into a component called Dolphin. Also, according to the announcement, konsole has been treated to a number of improvements such as split view, and history highlighting."

Prototype Telescopes Complete Key Test 78

Matthew Sparkes writes "Two prototype antennas for the world's largest array of millimeter-wave telescopes have passed a key test, working to track and image Saturn for more than an hour. Ultimately, ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) is expected to resolve details 10 times finer than the Hubble Space Telescope when it is completed in 2012."

All the options I looked at require end users to enter their full names and SSNs as part of the submission process, in plain sight of keyloggers and screen-scrapers."

Nothing quite so off the wall as the nuclear launch console for your PC, more along the lines of smart fan controllers (to produce as little noise as required to achieve a setpoint temperature) with USB or SMBus interfacing for setup, possibly upwards of small embedded systems that can control drives and host them as NFS/SMB shares ala low-end server appliance.
We want to be tinkerer friendly (JTAG accessible, Linux based) and hope to make money solely on the hardware and low level firmware side. What kinds of subsystem accessories does the /. crowd want to enhance the reliability and coolness factor of their PCs? What is the magic price point for your favorite accessory? What about an automotive pc in a form factor that would fit in an industry standard radio bay?"

(SF)exlex writes: "The popular forums for the Australian magazine AtomicMPC, a Haymarket Media publication, have banned linking to any other forums on the internet as described in their updated FAQ: ""Linking to any competitor site for the explicit purpose of recruiting new members is not allowed. It's simply bad form. We respect what you give, please respect what we provide. Linking to a competitor site that contains information related to the conversational topic at hand is fine. Acceptable examples: Posting to another tech site that has information not found on Atomic, or a game site that has exclusive information. Sending a PM to any member with the aim of recruiting for another site similar in forum content to Atomic is not allowed, and really is just plain bad manners. If you receive such a PM please report it to the moderators. These rules also apply to links in your sig."" In enforcing these rules members have been forced to remove any links to their personal websites in their sigs if they have a forum."

The home directory would be most simialar to the windows directory on a pc. The developer admits that there are several illegal cd-keys that unlock his demo program and that using such keys will "erase something". Many mac users and developers are expressing anger at such a move.

Journal Journal: Trying to get my medical data 1

I am a grad student in cardiovascular research [although less active at the moment]. I also recently had a few heart palpitations, that I sought medical attention for.

This included EKG's in the hospital, wearing a holter monitor, getting a stress test, and an echocardiogram. Really neat things for an interested researcher.

An anonymous reader writes: In my personal life, I have recently switched from an XP box to using OSX (filmmaker tired of fighting Adobe Premier). The one thing I miss is Microsoft OneNote. Its notebook style structure, ease of use and straightforward ability to share notebooks (and synch them) aided me in organizing both my personal and professional work. I have struggled to find something as intuitive (or feature rich) for OSX. Short of running parallels (and buying a legal copy of XP), can anyone suggest an alternative for OSX?
