US Attorney General Questions Habeas Corpus 1151

spiedrazer writes "In yet another attempt to create legitimacy for the Bush Administration's many questionable legal practices, US attorney General Alberto Gonzales actually had the audacity to argue before a Congressional committee that the US Constitution doesn't explicitly bestow habeas corpus rights on US citizens. In his view it merely says when the so-called Great Writ can be suspended, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the rights are granted. The Attorney General was being questioned by Sen. Arlen Specter at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Jan. 18. THe MSM are not covering this story but Colbert is (click on the fourth video down, 'Exact Words')." From the Baltimore Chronicle and Sentinel commentary: "While Gonzales's statement has a measure of quibbling precision to it, his logic is troubling because it would suggest that many other fundamental rights that Americans hold dear (such as free speech, freedom of religion, and the right to assemble peacefully) also don't exist because the Constitution often spells out those rights in the negative. It boggles the mind the lengths this administration will go to to systematically erode the rights and privileges we have all counted on and held up as the granite pillars of our society since our nation was founded."

Submission + - 'Smoking gun' report to say global warming here

gollum123 writes: "from the CNN, Human-caused global warming is here — visible in the air, water and melting ice — and is destined to get much worse in the future, an authoritative global scientific report will warn next week ( http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/01/23/climate .report.ap/index.html ). The first phase of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is being released in Paris next week. This segment, written by more than 600 scientists and reviewed by another 600 experts and edited by bureaucrats from 154 countries, includes a significantly expanded discussion of observation on the climate. That report will feature an "explosion of new data" on observations of current global warming. the 12-page summary for policymakers will be edited in secret word-by-word by governments officials for several days next week and released to the public on February 2. The rest of that first report from scientists will come out months later. The report will draw on already published peer-review science. Some recent scientific studies show that temperatures are the hottest in thousands of years, especially during the last 30 years; ice sheets in Greenland in the past couple years have shown a dramatic melting; and sea levels are rising and doing so at a faster rate in the past decade."

Submission + - Sony commits Blu-Ray suicide by restricting Porn

rwven writes: Prominent adult movie producer Digital Playground says it is forced to use HD DVD instead of Blu-ray, because Sony will not allow XXX-rated movies to be released on Blu-ray. It appears as though Sony hasn't learned anything since the days of Betamax. While plenty of people may agree (or disagree) with Sony's decision on a personal level, it's almost undeniable that the format which is adopted by the pornography industry is the format which will survive, regardless of technical superiority.
