Linux Format has a hands-on look at the new installer, SLAB menu and Compiz Fusion, and weighs up whether the distro can fight competition from Ubuntu and Fedora. Some of the highlights include the fast package management, KDE 3.5.9 and 4.0.3, GNOME 2.22.1 and an impressive new installer using Qt4 CSS-like stylesheets. Changes behind the scenes include switching to RPM LZMA payload, making RPMs smaller (faster to download), and quicker to decompress (faster installation)."

Benjamin Weber writes: The openSUSE team have just officially announced the availability of openSUSE 10.3 "Gold Master" (GM). The new version boasts a range of advances, including: beautiful green artwork, parts of KDE 4, SUSE-polished GNOME 2.20, a 1-click-install technology, a new package management stack, MP3 support out-of-the-box, a GTK version of YaST and a greatly improved boot time. While they now offer 1-CD Installation media — with a KDE CD, or the GNOME CD — the DVD with both desktop environments and extra software is still available.

On the second anniversary of the creation of the openSUSE(TM) project, the community program this week marked two new milestones — the availability of the first beta of openSUSE 10.3 and the continued growth of the openSUSE Build Service. The openSUSE Build Service is an innovative framework that provides an infrastructure for software developers to easily create and compile packages for multiple Linux* distributions. The development team today released the first version of the end-user interface for the build service, with which users of any openSUSE, SUSE(R) Linux Enterprise, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu or Mandriva distribution can easily search and browse new software for their distribution. Users of the upcoming openSUSE 10.3 can install their software with one click directly from the Web interface. In the past four months, more than 13 million packages have been downloaded from the openSUSE Build Service as developers build packages for various distributions using the tool.
