Comment eBay sells at a great loss (Score 4, Informative) 125

The interesting thing about this deal is that eBay actually bought Skype from the founders for 3.1 billion US dollars. They are now selling for 2 billion which makes you think about the huge loss and the extremely bad deal they made in buying in the first place. When eBay bought Skype it was seen by many as the worst IT business deal, ever!

Researchers Demo BIOS Attack That Survives Disk Wipes 396

suraj.sun writes "A pair of Argentinian researchers have found a way to perform a BIOS level malware attack capable of surviving even a hard-disk wipe. Alfredo Ortega and Anibal Sacco from Core Security Technologies — used the stage at last week's CanSecWest conference to demonstrate methods (PDF) for infecting the BIOS with persistent code that will survive reboots and re-flashing attempts. The technique includes patching the BIOS with a small bit of code that gave them complete control of the machine. The demo ran smoothly on a Windows machine, a PC running OpenBSD and another running VMware Player."

Submission + - BT Lists Initial Fibre Optic Broadband Exchanges (ispreview.co.uk)

MJackson writes: "BT has just released a full list of local UK telephone exchange locations where, from early 2010, its new super fast fibre optic based (FTTC) broadband services will become available from. This follows Saturday's news when BT outlined its plans to launch the product in several Scottish cities first. BT will deploy the FTTC service to 29 exchanges across the UK, most of which are urban although two will be for rural areas (Calder Valley (near Halifax) and Taffs Well (near Cardiff)) as part of a feasibility study into deploying next generation rural broadband solutions. FTTC will bring speeds of up to 40Mbps — and potentially 60Mbps — within reach of 500,000 homes and businesses. Areas of Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Greater Manchester will be amongst the first locations to benefit from this initial deployment."

World's Cheapest Car Goes On Sale In India 571

Frankie70 writes "The Tata Nano — the car that caught the world's imagination as the cheapest ever — will finally be rolled out commercially on Monday in Mumbai in a mega event organised by Tata Motors. Ben Oliver, contributing editor, Car Magazine, London test drove the car in December, 08. These were his first impressions. This was his verdict: 'CAR's first ride in the Tata Nano felt far more significant and exciting than a first drive in a Ferrari or Lamborghini, because this car's importance is immeasurably greater. It won't compete on dynamics or quality with European or Japanese city cars, but it doesn't have to. What Tata has achieved at an unprecedented price is astonishing, although we'd guess it will cost Indian consumers closer to £1700 when it finally goes on sale, six months late, in March 2009.'"

Submission + - Open Source Document Management System 1

francoisdp writes: "We recently restructured our growing research group an realized that we are a number of guys each sitting with a huge amount of research papers on our own machines. Everyone has his own collection due to differences in research focus, but what is the best way to centralize and therefore share these resources within the group?

I have had a quick look at Open Source Document Management Systems, but have not really had an in-depth investigation and I am not sure whether that is the road to follow. Can anyone suggest a strategy that is a bit more advanced than simply having one big ftp server or a shared folder on a server. The solution should ideally be open source, accessible from Linux and Windows and be able to host a variety of documentation types, such as papers, report, dissertations, etc."

Submission + - New Zealand halts internet copyright law changes (nbr.co.nz) 2

phobonetik writes: "The New Zealand Prime Minister announced his Government will throw out the controversial Section 92A of the Copyright Amendment (New Technologies) Act and start again. The proposed law changes contained 'guilty upon accusation, without appeal' clauses and heavy compliance costs to ISPs and businesses. The changes were hours away from being signed but a series of online protests, a petition on Government grounds, as well as public rebuttal by a large ISP and by Google contributed to the Government changing course and respecting the wishes of the IT industry."
