moogla writes: Apparently Dice.com could not make Slashdot work they way they wanted to; with a murky plan to tap into the Slashdot-reader community to somehow drive attention or insight into other Dice Holdings properities, they've burned through

$7.2 million of intangible assets and $6.3 million of goodwill related to Slashdot Media

and have only started to realize some improvement on related sites. With ad revenue declining and not expected to pick up (read: everyone who uses Slashdot uses adblocking softwarwe), it appears that the Slashdot stewardship experiment by Dice Holdings has been a financial failure. Since the site has been redesigned in a user-hostile fashion with a very generic styling, this reader surmises Dice Holdings is looking to transform or transfer the brand into a generic Web 3.0 technology property. The name may be more valuable than the user community (since we drive no revenue nor particularly use Dice.com's services).

An anonymous reader writes: The beta is bad. It's so bad. The comments are reduced in screen width about 50%. Subject lines are deemphasized, scores are minimized, etc.

The discussions are the reason to come to Slashdot, and the beta trivializes them entirely. It looks like the comment section on a generic news site.

The comments now look like an afterthought, whereas they used to be the primary focus of the site.

hduff writes: Look at almost any current Slashdot story and see loyal, long-time members rail against the new site design, willing to burn precious karma points to post off-topic rants against the new design and it being forced on users by the Dice Overlords. Discussion has begun to create an alternate site.

wbr1 writes: It seems abundantly clear now that Dice and the SlashBeta designers do not care one whit about the community here. They do not care about rolling in crapware into sourceforge installers. In short, the only thing that talks to them is money and stupid ideas.

Granted, it takes cash to run sites like these, but they were fine before. The question is, do some of you here want to band together, get whatever is available of slashcode and rebuild this community somewhere else? We can try to make it as it once was, a haven of geeky knowledge and frosty piss, delivered free of charge in a clean community moderated format.

This is nothing new, as past style changes have had similar effects. However, this pass there are significant usability changes: A narrower read pane, limited moderation filtering, and several color/size/font adjustments. BETA implies not yet complete, so taking that cue — please list your specific, detailed opinoins, one per comment, and let's use the best part of slashdot (the moderation system) to raise the attention to these. Change can be jarring, but let's focus on the true usability differences with the new style.

I must be completed retarded, firstly for responding to trolls and secondly that I can build all the machines in my gigabit lan, tweak them to run as fast as possible, remove all the chances of loading ad sites with a host file, not use internet explorer or microsoft email, not click on any unfamiliar attachments and never see any unusual traffic on my lan.

Yet according to you, the new internet expert, I must be owned because you cannot fathom that someone besides yourself can actually run a computer?

I cannot believe the ignorant troll responses this post has garnered. You guys should get the hell out of your mom's basement and open your minds a little.

Because there are more people out there that are like me. They know how to use and secure a computer and are not dumb enough to open email attachments.

That's the only way left for malware to get on a machine if you don't use internet exploder. No drive by downloads. You have to allow it through negligence or stupidity.

The sad part is the amount of dumb people that click on anything, download warez and go to bad porn sites.

Those are the bozos you should be worried about.

Troll. I have been running xp machines WITHOUT ANY UPDATES for years and have not had any issues. First thing I do, shut off the updates and the damn firewall from hell.

Yes I have anti-virus and NO, I've never had a problem.

Router/ Firewall and a hosts file and don't be a moron and the thing will work forever.

I have tons of software and games that my little kids are gonna get a chance to use because I can keep these machines running.

I will probably be running XP machines for another 12 years or longer.

Microsoft support means nothing to me.
