I still get a wee bit finicky about the word "MODEM" being thrown about. The is no cable modem nor DSL modem. In both cases the signal remains digital. MODEM is MOdulation and DEModulation. You might actually find Win10 to be less flashy than Vista/7/8. It's mostly flat with few visual effects, gradients and the like, and even transparency can be deactivated.

Try manual - that may work. I have not tried it but manual would (likely) mean that you could manually start the update process from the start menu and not need to turn the service back on so you will save a step.
