Comment Sure, RIGHT. (Score 3, Insightful) 250

You know, Slashdot could've gone the way of Wikipedia, which has a bunch of crazy entries on the front page which are actually truthful in some way (albeit usually misleading in a humorous way). Instead we get the usual "HUR HUR MICROSOFT RELEASES CP/M 9.2" bullshit.

Oh, wait, what? This one is serious? Nah, can't be. I mean, you've cried wolf how often?

So, given AT&T and Comcast colluding with the RIAA now, it sounds like now would be a great time for somebody in the UK to set up an encrypted VPN connection, available to folks for a nominal monthly fee.

I swear, I'm starting to consider subscribing to one and routing all of my traffic through it permanently. I am sick of these fuckers pawing through my traffic looking for evidence of wrongdoing.

There are no other broadband ISPs in many places, including where I live. Hell, I don't even get to choose DSL -- cable is the only option.

AT&T and Comcast know this. They don't give a shit about their customers, because they're usually the only game in town. So the only option is to abandon broadband entirely and stick with a dial-up, spend ridiculous amounts on a leased line, or spend even more ridiculous amounts on satellite Internet (which has lag times that are way too high for VoIP or online gaming). If there were another option I'd be jumping on it in an instant.

Yeah. I mean, it's not like any of those old mainframes running COBOL applications with two-digit year fields were still in use when the year 2000 came around.

I kid, I kid... I know you were talking about consumer software, but even that's not entirely safe. Bits of code, especially in operating systems, architecture support layers, board support layers, and drivers, have a weird way of sticking around...

Submission + - Home Server manufacturer vs. DVD CCA goes to trial

whoever57 writes: The DVD Copy Control Association (CCA) is suing Kaleidescope, who manufacture a home server. The home server copies the contents of the DVDs, along with the keys used to decrypt the DVD data to a hard drive. The DVD CCA claim this allows users to watch the contents of DVDs after they no longer have the physical disk and that such a feature violates the DVD CCA contract. Kaleidescope claims that their system merely enables fair use of the content. The trial starts today in Santa Clara, CA.

An anonymous reader writes: In his excellent paper " The Colors of Twilight and Sunset ," Stephen F. Corfidi, a Lead Forecaster with the NOAA/NWS Storm Prediction Center, explains why "some parts of the world enjoy more beautiful sunsets than others, and why do they favor certain months? What are the ingredients for truly memorable sunrises and sunsets?" (Hint: Lots of clean air.)

Submission + - RIAA defends suits against college students

An anonymous reader writes: Mitch Bainwol chairman and CEO of RIAA and Cary Sherman it's president wrote a piece defending their new campaign targeting college students. "It's not just the loss of current sales that concerns us, but the habits formed in college that will stay with these students for a lifetime. This is a teachable moment — an opportunity to educate these particular students about the importance of music in their lives and the importance of respecting and valuing music as intellectual property."

Submission + - Vendors selling your contact info?

Sorthum writes: "I ordered a memory card from Tiger Direct using a dedicated email address a few days ago. The card hasn't even arrived yet, and yet I found something VERY interesting in my inbox this morning: a lottery scam email to that tagged address, relayed through Cox's outbound servers. Apparently TigerDirect is either compromised, or selling their addresses to spammers — this address has never received a hit until I placed the order, and no one else has it. There is no evidence of a dictionary attack in the server logs either. My call to their customer service line proved to be fruitless — their drone refused to escalate the call, or provide a satisfactory response. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?"
