Comment Remember the Viacom Fight (Score 1) 479

Earlier this year, TW and Viacom had a falling out.  The commercials blaming each other.

Recall the letter from TW, stating that, if the Viacom channels were not renewed, don't worry, you can always view them online?

TW makes sure to do what they can to make as many people as possible aware that, Hey!  We can watch shows online!

I was having all sorts of trouble.  Watching my bandwidth meters on my Smoothwall (stand alone firewall on a spare machine), it appears that the data stream on the RED side (connected to the cable modem) was being interrupted somewhere, (7Kbps to 0Kbps for 5 seconds back to 7Kbps) and of course, I blamed the ISP.

While waiting for the tech to arrive, I dug a bit deeper.  SSH'ed into the firewall, and turns out the RED NIC was going bad.  Collisions and errors like crazy.

Swapped out the Smoothwall with a spare Linksys and DD-WRT, and the issue is resolved, and have full 10Kbps download again.

The moral of the story...check your hardware in detail, too.  Working doesn't always mean it's working correctly.

Submission + - Sirus Eliminating Free Internet Radio (sirius.com) 1

Lummoxx writes: Sirius is eliminating free internet listening, unless, of course, you pay more money. Although money grabs like this are expected from companies, the problem here is, they're doing it mid-subscription. When I renewed in October for a year, I renewed the plan that included the internet radio access for that year. Note that, if you "RENEW NOW", they'll continue your internet radio access for the duration of THAT subscription.

Submission + - Accellerated X drivers coming for PS3 Linux (ps2dev.org)

t0qer writes: Over at the PS2dev forums a hacker named Ironpeter has successfully managed to bypass the PS3's Hypervisor to gain direct access to it's Nvidia RSX GPU.

This is s first step and far from a complete working driver, but it seems as word of this spreads, more people are helping with the effort to hunt down the Hypervisors Fifo/Push buffer. It won't be long before we're playing tux racer on the PS3 in it's full OpenGL glory.

Submission + - BD+ copy protection on Blu-ray hacked (cdfreaks.com)

NoBluray writes: Slysoft has released a beta version of AnyDVD HD, their software that allows you to make backup of HD-DVD and Blu-ray (the High Definition (HD) formats) discs. The company already won a few battles in their war against the protection of these formats. Now it seems to have won the last one and defeated the Blu-ray BD+ protection.

The BD+ protection is a smallvirtual machine that is embedded in Blu-ray players and can help protecting the device. For example it checks if someone has e.g been trying to hack it. Then code on Blu-ray discs can be released in the BD+ format which can patch hacked devices.
