NBC To Live Stream Olympics Event 186

An anonymous reader writes "According to Broadcasting Cable, NBC is going to stream the gold medal Men's hockey game live on the NBC Olympics web site. This is in preparation for (hopefully) many more live feeds throughout the year. The video stream will have DRM and IP protection to attempt to limit access to residents of the US, like the other event video on the site. With the stream served by Akamai's CDN, it will be interesting to see if it can sustain the load. The game starts around 8:00am EST on Sunday, Feb 26 if you are interested in checking it out."

Swarms of Microrobots Over Europe? 161

Roland Piquepaille writes "In 'Mini robots to undertake major tasks?,' IST Results describes a EU-funded project which allowed to build several kinds of microrobots in the last three years. These robots are very small (about 1.5 cm by 3 cm), have limited on-board intelligence and are wirelessly controlled by a central robot control system. A follow-on project has already started, with an even more ambitious goal: deploy 'real' swarms of up to 1,000 robot clients. Such robot swarms are expected to perform 'a variety of applications, including micro assembly, biological, medical or cleaning tasks.' Read more for additional details, pictures and references about this follow-on project not described by the article mentioned above."

Small-Town Open Source Adoption 134

An anonymous reader writes "ZDNet has a piece on the adoption of open source software by Steamboat Springs, CO. The small resort town has integrated OSS into all aspects of productivity and e-governance. Kent Morrison, the IS Manager for the town, discusses what made them switch and how it has gone." From the article: "What about Linux on the desktop--is this an option for your organization? Morrison: We've discussed it. With Linux's ability to emulate Windows improving every year, we see that as a possibility. We would build a Linux image for the majority of users, but for the 20 percent of users that run Windows-only applications we would keep them on the same platform. We would try to make a Linux desktop look like our Windows environment (the organization currently runs Windows 2000 but will start rolling out XP this year) as we don't want to retrain our users. We don't have a time frame for installing Linux yet, though."

Why Don't You Sleep On It? 318

thefirelane wrote to mention a New Scientist study that indicates your subconscious mind is a better decision maker than you are. From the article: "The research suggests the conscious mind should be trusted only with simple decisions, such as selecting a brand of oven glove. Sleeping on a big decision, such as buying a car or house, is more likely to produce a result people remain happy with than consciously weighing up the pros and cons of the problem, the researchers say. Thinking hard about a complex decision that rests on multiple factors appears to bamboozle the conscious mind so that people only consider a subset of information, which they weight inappropriately, resulting in an unsatisfactory choice. In contrast, the unconscious mind appears able to ponder over all the information and produce a decision that most people remain satisfied with."

We Don't Need No Stinkin' Broadband 572

Ant writes "eMarketer has an article on The Yankee Group's analysis on why some Americans aren't feeling the broadband love. It was based on Ipsos Public Affairs. 45% of Americans say it's simply too expensive. 30% say that they just don't want it. 14% say they feel dial-up is adequate for their needs. Less than 10% are not able to get broadband access in their area. Five percent insist broadband is "too complicated". Another 5% aren't even sure why they don't have it..."

Comment Re:Taught early -- in daycare? (Score 1) 840

I started wondering if the childhood obesity phenomenon couldn't partly be traced to daycare; at an early age, if given the opportunity, the staff will use food the way they probably use it themselves -- as a way to soothe and manage anxiety.

I would believe that the association between food and comfort/attention can start quite young. It could also be that putting a child in daycare makes it harder to continue breastfeeding, which is thought to have a protective effect against obesity. (BBC news article.)

Journal Journal: I have a freak!

My latest posting on Slashdot earned me 2 fans and a freak. I guess that's still a net positive... I could probably have been even more inflammatory - pinko commie Canadian that I am - but I restrained myself. :P

Journal Journal: OMGWTFPREGGERS!!11 4

Yay! I am pregnant! I couldn't be happier, except maybe if morning sickness would actually end at noon instead of making me feel wretched all day... but it's always morning somewhere, I guess.

I'm so excited, I just want to spend all day in the store looking at baby stuff. Only 8 months of incubation left to go!

Journal Journal: The Boston annual festive holiday branch

Just thinking, since the Boston Christmas tree is getting so much publicity these days, I find it sad that the news stories hardly ever mention the origin of the tree. The Boston Christmas tree is an annual gift from Nova Scotia as a thank-you for the help sent after the Halifax explosion. (On December 6, 1917, two ships - one full of munitions - collided in the Halifax harbour. The resulting explosion levelled most of the downtown.

Journal Journal: evolution: u no love it!?

Next week we are installing a cosmic ray detector at some christian elementary school. They specifically asked us not to mention the e-word while we were there. (After all, it would take them hours to remold the kids' malleable little world-views, should we accidentally drop a phrase like, say, "fossil evidence".)

The slashdot gender bias bothers me. Not the fact that slashdot readers seem to be 95% male, but the fact that there are so many negative comments about women. Especially when they get modded up as "insightful"... I also read forums where the gender ratio is reversed, and there are nowhere near as many negative comments about men on those boards. So what gives?

Journal Journal: On Electronic Voting... thoughts from a Canadian :)

Reading the comments on the electronic voting story today was interesting. After reading them, here's what the kind of electronic voting system I would want:

1.) Voter selects a candidate from a menu (including write-in option).

2.) For write-in votes, the voter can enter the name from a keypad or touchscreen.

The Internet

Journal Journal: Have spork, will travel...

The cats are restless... I wish I could let them outside. It's sad to have to explain over and over that because they weren't evolved to recognize cars as dangerous, they are just going to have to pass the time by posting to slashdot. It's a tough life, but if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for them...

Journal Journal: Send me to Mars please... 2

If NASA wanted to send someone on a one-way mission to Mars, I would go. Just be sure to hook me up with a lifetime supply of junk food and an internet connection, and I'd be set. I'd take Teaser and Firecat too, of course. They're leash trained - how much harder could it be to get them in a space suit?

And if Mars is to far, just send me to Canada. :)
