Submission + - Microsoft Zune affected by 'bug'

Skiron writes: "The BBC are reporting that Faulty software has crippled 30GB first generation versions of the Microsoft Zune digital media player

On the Zune Insider website, Microsoft said it had been aware of the problem since early in the morning of December 31.
It said its technical team "jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue" — a fault in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year.
Said Microsoft: "The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009."

Submission + - Dell video blog on Solid State har Drives

Skiron writes: "Dell has posted an interesting vblog, "More on Solid State Disk Technology", by Tom Pratt,
the storage technologist on the Office of the CTO team.

Though SSD drives bring lots of benefits, traditional hard drives aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
At this point, one of the downsides of SSD drives is price — they are still pretty expensive.
But, like most new technologies, the price should come down over time as the technology
becomes more mainstream.

Tom explains what they are, performance compared to traditional mechanical drives, and what the futures holds for this technology."

Submission + - Excel 65535 bug fixed... sort of.

Skiron writes: On the team Excel blog page, news of a fix for the embarrassing Excel 65535 bug was released — you can read it here along with links to the KB articles.
There still appears to be issues installing it, though, as seen from a bloogers reply to a question:

"We've gotten one other report of this and are looking into the possible cause.
You may be able to solve it by uninstalling Office 2007 and reinstalling it
(then apply the patch to a clean installation). If you try that, I'd like to know the results."

Submission + - Chess: Man vs Machine - Machine wins 2nd game

Skiron writes: "In the latest 'man vs machine' chess computer match, day 2 (sponsored by and home page to the challenge) RAG, after the first game was drawn between Wladimir Kramnik and Fritz, Kramnik made a silly human error in the end game to be mated in one! Is this now proof that chess machines, which are always tireless, are starting to get the upper hand on the human opponent (no matter how good)?"
