Now that you mention it, I can't remember when I last heard an ad on Pandora. Maybe they are doing the visual ads, but once I start it running I only go back to the tab when it shuts down.
I would prefer they do the visual ads. That way I don't have to look at them and can ignore them as I do with all advertisements. Unfortunately, audio advertisements waste my time while I ignore them while the visual ones can just be occurring while i am doing something else and still listening to music.

Every clearinghouse in the country also supports the idea of a Token that is not your card number. That doesn't mean the vendors will, either on the current system or on the proposed system.
Phone companies are not regulated as Credit Card companies, and until they are, they should not be allowed to facilitate these transactions. They are enjoying the benefit of processing these transactions without any of the added extra cost of enforcing consumer protection. Instead, if you say you didn't buy something, then they say "tough. If you don't pay it, we are going to report you to the credit agencies,"

I guess I'd just make some different programming choices- and eventually really want to replace the computer in my Prius with one that has some added features. These features may already be available on newer models, mine is a 2006 Gen2.

Features I'd like to see:
1. The only reason to run the gas engine under 25 miles an hour should be for recharging and generating, period. EV mode only at low speed.
2. An expert mode should be available wherein "creep ahead at stop" is disabled
3. Cruise control should also be able to be set by a numeric keypad, and should be able to handle values lower than 23.
4. Sport mode should be available that disengages the traction control and enables all three motors for acceleration (you can get the second half of this in a gen2 by angrily stomping on the accelerator, it takes a second to engage, but you suddenly go from 34 HP to 174 HP as the second electric and the gas motor kick in).
5. Finer resolution than 5 minutes on the average MPG consumption graph.
6. Ability to download trip data onto an SD card.

That's probably the difference then. I had an individual plan prior to Obamacare because coverage through the company was too expensive. I paid about 1/3 of what I would have paid through my company insurance for my family. People used to complain that you couldn't get affordable insurance except through a company, but I think that was a rumor spread by the corporations to keep people from leaving them.
Unfortunately, when Obamacare came along, my previously affordable insurance went about by a factor of 4 or 5. It was still cheaper than my company's insurance plan, which also went up by about 50%, so I stayed with my individual plan, but I had to switch to a different individual plan to get it down to only 3 times the previous year's plan.

What If We Lost the Sky? 421

HughPickens.com (3830033) writes "Anna North writes in the NYT that a report released last week by the National Research Council calls for research into reversing climate change through a process called albedo modification: reflecting sunlight away from earth by, for instance, spraying aerosols into the atmosphere. But such a process could, some say, change the appearance of the sky — and that in turn could affect everything from our physical health to the way we see ourselves. "You'd get whiter skies. People wouldn't have blue skies anymore." says Alan Robock. "Astronomers wouldn't be happy, because you'd have a cloud up there permanently. It'd be hard to see the Milky Way anymore."

According to Dacher Keltner, a psychology professor at the University of California, losing the night sky would have big consequences. "When you go outside, and you walk in a beautiful setting, and you just feel not only uplifted but you just feel stronger. There's clearly a neurophysiological basis for that," says Keltner, adding that looking up at a starry sky provides "almost a prototypical awe experience," an opportunity to feel "that you are small and modest and part of something vast." If we lose the night sky "we lose something precious and sacred." "We're finding in our lab that the experience of awe gets you to feel connected to something larger than yourself, see the humanity in other people," says Paul K. Piff. "In many ways it's kind of an antidote to narcissism." And the sky is one of the few sources of that experience that's available to almost everybody: "Not everyone has access to the ocean or giant trees, or the Grand Canyon, but we certainly all live beneath the night sky."

Alan Robock says one possible upside of adding aerosols could be beautiful red and yellow sunsets as "the yellow and red colors reflect off the bottom of this cloud." Robock recommends more research into albedo modification: "If people ever are tempted to do this, I want them to have a lot of information about what the potential benefits and risks would be so they can make an informed decision. Dr. Abdalati says deploying something like albedo modification is a last-ditch effort. "We've gotten ourselves into a climate mess. The fact that we're even talking about these kinds of things is indicative of that."

This works great in business. You get somebody hooked on your product with a bunch of promises and by the time they find out they are too deep in to back out. Not sure how well it works in relationships. Oh, wait, the divorce rate continues to rise even though there is a huge jump in the number of couples living together and not getting married at all. Huh, I guess founding your relationship on a lie is a bad idea after all.
