Verizon To Offer iPhone Users Unlimited Data 327

Hugh Pickens writes "The WSJ reports that Verizon Wireless, the country's largest wireless carrier, is confident enough in its network that it will offer unlimited data-use plans when it starts selling the iPhone around the end of this month, a person familiar with the matter says. Such plans would provide a key means of distinguishing its service from rival AT&T Inc., which limits how much Internet data its customers may use each month. Verizon has a lot at stake as it starts to carry the iPhone, which it is expected to announce Tuesday at an event in New York City. Verizon, more than any other US carrier, has built its reputation on its network quality, and any stumble in handling iPhone traffic will call into question Verizon's major selling point. On the other hand, if it does handle the iPhone well, then AT&T will have a harder time arguing it didn't mismanage its own network. Anthony J. Melone, Verizon's chief technology officer, says the company has invested heavily in its 3G network to handle surging smartphone traffic, including nine million Android subscribers, up from none a year earlier.'"

Yeah...I've started wondering, am I not a trekkie any more? I didn't really watch the last TV series, I can't even tell you what it was called. I went to see the movie this past weekend and was underwhelmed. Spock was great but on the whole, there was nothing particularly interesting about it. A lot of kids running the Enterprise? Yawn. Time travel? So overdone, and not particularly well done this time. There were none of the interesting, weird, thought-provoking ideas that I'm used to seeing from the first two series. Maybe I'm just old and grumpy, but I felt the movie was deliberately dumbed down to try and get greater mass appeal.

Thanks for writing this, I've enjoyed Rogue Touch quite a bit. It's remained true to the original - it's a tough game and the adaptation to the iPhone was pretty smooth, without making it feel too flashy on the gfx.

My wife missed the end of Idol the other night, and she wanted to know what happened. I told her to just search twitter to find out, and sure enough, there were like 1700 results that came through in 30 seconds. First thing I've found it to be useful for, and it was a pretty lame use. Lots of people seem to enjoy it for some reason, I wish I knew why...

To offer a slightly different perspective: If he felt that management was going to misuse the passwords to compromise the security of the network, he was best off sticking to his guns, as it would have come back on him, not management, if the security was compromised. Corruption at the top levels is not unheard-of. It just doesn't sound like that's what happened. In situations like this, people typically work out some compromise, like bringing in outside contractors with limited permissions or with a separate admin account for a limited time, etc.

Based on what we have seen, as you said, he was most likely engaged in a power struggle with management, and he handled it poorly when management could have just come in and said "you're fired, give us the passwords and leave."

I think that most people want the computer to anticipate their actions and adjust accordingly - seamlessly. The context-sensitive menus and toolbars in both Windows and OSX are a move in this direction. The animated assistants can sometimes be helpful but most often they get in the way. The animated assistants also made me feel stupid if I did something to invoke them by making a mistake, and no one likes to feel stupid. I think major issues like this will prevent them from ever being widely useful until, possibly, someone can make them into a primary interface, which is a long ways off still.
