Comment Re:And the scientific evidence for this conclusion (Score 1) 391

If you're going to commit to this exercise where you use extrapolation to arrive at a conclusion, then you're going to have to take things like 3d-printing into account and even just the general demand for machines that build machines that will lead to eventual technical advances.

Try to remember that when you cherry-pick what does and doesn't count when extrapolating stuff like this you're simply adding to the risk that earlier you implied was a bad thing.

Sure extrapolation is always risky, seems a far better to bet than going with super intelligent robots that don't exist at all on the only planet we know that has life on it.

If you apply that same extrapolation to what's happening here on Earth right now and you get right back to the super-robots being dominant. I'll give you a hint: robots are the dominant life-form on Mars right now.

Latin is a dead language, please understand that.

People keep repeating this line ad-nauseum, spouting 'language is dead', etcetera. They might have bona-fide complaints, but maybe they're an alias for a different annoyance, perhaps that they didn't pay enough attention in school circa 9th grade to maintain a simple conversation on a site known to attract tech-lovers. Ergo this problem will not be solved quickly.

Here is my problem: Google has a long history of cooperating with NSA.

Don't believe me? Fine: read these links instead... Yahoo News article about cooperation between Google and NSA, Guardian article, Tom's Guide article.

Even if Google does not/did not/will not cooperate with NSA, Eric Schmidt himself has been cooperating with the US Government, which cast serious doubts about his desire to protect the private information of Google clients.

Again, don't believe me? Fine, read this instead: Julian Assange on Eric Schmidt. Or (even better) this transcript.

Even if Eric Schmidt does not cooperate with the US Government, he has said himself, repeatedly, that privacy is dead and that it's something for hackers.

Don't believe me? Fine, read this instead: EFF article, Gawker article.

In other words, a company that cooperated with the NSA, led by a man who does not care about your privacy (but cares very much about his) is telling you that there is nothing to see here, sure we are protecting your privacy, please buy our products, we are safe and professionals and there is nothing to be afraid of.

Seriously? How come this gasbag is a freaking CEO, paid millions of dollars a year?

I loved the shit out of that man as a kid, teenager and early adult.
Then I listened to several of his interviews, his passion for film is virtually "show me the money" when it came to Indy 4, I recall him pimping it, I also recall him saying "ahh they'll fix shit in editing / post" kind of stuff. He hates the Han Shot first stuff and he frankly, comes off as a phony to me.

Loved him in SW and the (only) 3 Indy movies made but the man isn't exactly into the universes of the films he creates.
Don't believe me? Go seek out some of the interviews in the last 15 years.

I would suspect most disks used in this size range would be without much I/O, infact I'd go as far as to say (for me personally) fuck regular disks for high I/O. I'm still flabberghasted they sell 7200rpm HDD's for the desktop

If you want performance, just buy an SSD or SSHD.

I'd be happy with about 6 of these in my FreeNAS machine, I'm sure 6 combined would still turn over a decent data rate.
