Comment Windows based control... (Score 1) 663

There was a story recently about computers at drone facilities being infected by Windows-based viruses. And we've known for years now that the connection to the drones is not encrypted (which is why $500 worth of laptop+sat cards allows insurgents to view drone feeds).

Somehow I doubt the drones themselves are of much higher caliber software wise. Wouldn't surprise me if the software and hardware isn't protected.

After wiki-leaks especially, it wouldn't surprise me if Iran had their hands on source code and hardware specs already and DID bring the drone down electronically.

Comment WebOS Printer Support (Score 1) 226

On the touchpad, one of the big selling points was the ability to print to HP printers.

Of course, most HP printers didn't work. Like my LaserJet 1018. Or Color Laserjet 4600.

Come to think of it, never got a single printer working with it. There's a reason HP's profits are down 90%.

Is it so hard to have an ARM version of CUPS that can print to everything?

Comment Re:no, no, no... dammit! WebOS on better hardware! (Score 1) 86

WebOS is really nice; got to love the multi-tasking.

But let's look at some of the bad parts.

A browser that is unusable if you have more than a few websites open. A complete lack of apps (even after installing preware).

Even after overclocking to 1.8Ghz, it takes a good 5 seconds after turning a PDF page for it to "unblur" and come into focus. Oh, and the browser does that same blurry, unfocused crap too. Often for more than 15 seconds.

Because at the time, they were the 'only game in town', simple as that.

And we see how well that has worked out for them.

Companies need to realize that they need the developers and not the other way around. If you treat them like shit, they will jump ship as soon as a competitor comes out (instead of, say, developing for both platforms).

Comment From who? (Score 4, Insightful) 361

Who would you be buying it from? In most cases you'd just be buying a shady company for a pirated ROM regardless. Most of the companies that made these games no longer exist. Any IP is going to be owned by a large corp like Nintendo, who will want you to buy their console and not DIY You are saying you do not want to pirate, while at the same time you want to use this content in an un-authorized/un-approved way. Piracy is your only real option if you want to play "popular" game ROMs.

Comment Why all the outrage? (Score 0) 187

It's a common practice when you mod your console to play homebrew/backups NEVER to accept another update again.

Obviously something could break (accidentally due to the mod, or on purpose by the company). In other words: DON'T UPDATE IF YOU MOD YOUR HARDWARE.

Everyone gives Nintendo crap about how easily hacked their systems are and how they DIDN'T take many steps to prevent it. Now they're trying to make sure that the 3DS doesn't have the same piracy issues as the other DSes and people are surprised/outraged?
