Submission + - Gmail insecure?

An anonymous reader writes: Evidently there is a large hole in security at google. Gmail accounts that have similar names will copy each other on messages sent to one address. I have an address that goes firstname.lastname@gmail.com and someone else has firstnamelastname@gmail.com and I constantly recieve this other users messages. After making multiple attempts to contact google via the web based support submission system, nothing has changed with the accounts activities. Maybe this is isolated to my account and maybe not. In either case it represents a huge potential problem with the way gmail handles itself.

Submission + - The Great Eyeglasses Scam

NiteBird writes: Is poor distance vision (myopia) really not genetic after all? Are eye doctors getting us hooked on ever stronger prescription glasses and contact lenses? Don Rehm of the International Myopia Prevention Association thinks so. Online journalist Fintan Dunne interviews Don, and explains how too much close focusing (e.g. reading and computer work) gives you myopia in the first place, and how glasses prescribed for myopia make your vision worse in the second place, but also, how you can turn the laws of optics to your advantage and use reading glasses (the kind you can buy at the pharmacy) to help you keep or possibly restore your clear distant vision!

Submission + - DMCA Creator Admits Failure, Blames RIAA

An anonymous reader writes: DMCA architect Bruce Lehman has admitted that "our Clinton administration policies didn't work out very well" and "our attempts at copyright control have not been successful". Speaking at conference in Montreal (video at 11:00), Lehman lay much of the blame at the feet of the recording industry for their failure to adapt to the online marketplace in the mid-1990s.

Submission + - CO2, greenhouse effect not causing global warming?

dazl writes: UK's Channel 4 "The Great Global Warming Swindle" documentary convincingly makes a number of points, including, CO2 increase is the effect, and not the cause, of temperature increase (and 800 years later at that). They claim data shows that what drives climate change is sun activity. After watching this the award-winning Gore piece has little credibility left. Video at google and youtube.

Submission + - Google screws over Owner of popular OSS project

buhatkj writes: The guy who runs the popular OSS 3d engine project Irrlicht just got banned from Google AdSense, after an accusation of click fraud!
From the Blog Post:

"Maybe you've noticed, for the last few days some google ads appeared on this blog, but they have disappeared now again. That's because I just got banned from google adsense for life time (as it seems), although I didn't do anything wrong."

Not only that, but they are witholding monies already earned by his ads prior to the accusation.

"In that mail, they did not even tell me any information about their problem with my ads, only "invalid clicks or page impressions". No IP adresses, no channel ID, no website, no time or date, no amount of clicks, nothing. No way for me to find out what was wrong. There was the possibility to contradict, and I tried to explain some possible causes like the sudden increased amount of traffic, but they ignored me. The interesting thing: They now even won't pay out the money I already earned before the occurance of their 'invalid clicks' assert. "

Submission + - Linus fires latest shot in GNOME Wars

HellFeuer writes: Linus speaks out against GNOME again. When challenged to use GNOME for a month, he submitted patches to the GNOME project to prove his criticism is *constructive*, saying "The code is actually _cleaner_ after my patches, and the end result is more capable. We'll see what happens". However, he still didn't commit to actually using GNOME.

Submission + - Build A World

queenb**ch writes: "A new open source development is roaming the net. They've found a home over at BuildaWorld.net. They're taking the Delta3D engine and turning it into something a bit more user friendly and ready to build a game with. It's getting the networking components added back in along with avatar inventory and a user interface. That should make it ready for a RPG or FPS game. Their "mission statement" and "purpose" is as follows... Now a small bird told me that they're getting close to releasing the network code and that the avartar inventory and UI won't be far behind it. You can visit them at http://www.buildaworld.net/ for more information.

Mission Statement

We are an alliance of smaller teams that are working to build a rules-independent world-independent Free Software-licensed game engine that we can share.

Purpose

Our purpose is for several teams to come together to create tools that let you build your own virtual world, roleplaying game, or whatever else you can imagine. Our purpose is to create a game engine and at least one "reference world."

1 — The license must permit anyone to use, modify, and distribute work based on our products.

2 — All decisions will be made by participating teams, not by a few individuals.

3 — Creation, administration, and maintenance of the demonstration shards will be shared by participating teams.

4 — The reference world will demonstrate that the game engine functions.

5 — The reference world will serve as a working "HOWTO" with examples of some basic tasks."

Water Logic Gates Built at MIT 239

ndogg writes "This story is all wet. Paulo Blikstein at MIT has created a water computer. The one boolean logic gate he created functions as a half-adder (i.e. both XOR and AND). He then proceeded to create a four bit adder."
