The Perfect Way To Slice a Pizza 282

iamapizza writes "New Scientist reports on the quest of two math boffins for the perfect way to slice a pizza. It's an interesting and in-depth article; 'The problem that bothered them was this. Suppose the harried waiter cuts the pizza off-center, but with all the edge-to-edge cuts crossing at a single point, and with the same angle between adjacent cuts. The off-center cuts mean the slices will not all be the same size, so if two people take turns to take neighboring slices, will they get equal shares by the time they have gone right round the pizza — and if not, who will get more?' This is useful, of course, if you're familiar with the concept of 'sharing' a pizza."

Sony...Bug Free...I'm speechless. Utterly, even sarcasm fails me.

On the other notes, SOE has always struck me as a perfect example of how NOT to run online gaming. It took quite a bit of effort to eliminate the lead Everquest had, but by splitting the market & alienating players, they managed to do it. They seem to have followed this pattern more than once as well.

I'll prob dl the game just to use Smed's/SOE's names as obscenities again.

Ok, I just actually looked at the game...I can't even stomach the intro movie, I don't want to see gameplay. World of Goo is suddenly a compelling deep game with an interesting plotline.

A continuation of the clear pattern of English aggression.

They along with their Canadian minions are a clear and present danger to National Security. We should immediately respond by liberating Canada from the Yoke of Socialism under which they have struggled for so many years. They will welcome our just and correct rule of their impoverished nation.

We shall then through a series of landing from our bases in France & Norway, liberate England and ultimately place it in a protectorate administered by the Irish & French.

In Iran, Blogging May Be Punishable By Death 495

An anonymous reader writes "In Iran, crimes such as apostasy (leaving a religion, in this case Islam) and armed robbery are already punishable by death, but a new bill in Iran aims to add to the list 'establishing weblogs and sites promoting corruption, prostitution and apostasy,' effectively giving the government a free hand in silencing bloggers. The internet is widely used in Iran, despite its previous attempts at censorship. Will this change as the censorship grows more rampant?"

Arecibo Observatory Facing Massive Budget Cuts 171

SirLurksAlot writes "Many supporters of the SETI@home project have recently received a message informing them of impending budget cuts for the Arecibo Observatory and asking them to show their support for the project by writing to Congress. The letter also informs supporters that there are currently two bills (Senate bill 2862 sponsored by Senator Hillary Clinton, and a similar House bill, H.R. 3737), which are intended to secure funding for the project. According to The Planetary Society, the current plan for the Arecibo Observatory involves cutting funding by more than 60% from $10.4 million to just $4 million by 2011."

Submission + - Apple Offering 'Fake Steve' Cash to Close Shop (blogspot.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Daniel Lyons, a.k.a. Fake Steve Jobs, made a post earlier today about how Apple was apparently offering him some money (in the wake of the ThinkSecret shutdown) to end his blog 'The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs', and that he was interested in taking it. A few hours later, Lyons made another post, saying that Apple's lawyers had contacted him angrily, saying the details of the deal were supposed to remain private. Could this be the end of the blog which has entertained us with the egomaniac rantings of "Steve" for the past year?

Submission + - Chinese Hackers Wake up to Malware

An anonymous reader writes: From ITWeek: Security researchers are noticing an increase in malware originating from China, which is adding to the challenge of investigating online threats. "The past three to four months have seen a slow increase in Chinese malware. It used to be the odd file every now and then, but it is now almost every day," said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at FaceTime Communications. China has traditionally been a hotbed of password stealers who go after log-in names and passwords for online games such as World of Warcraft. The criminals are after virtual currencies and goods which can be sold on auction websites. But FaceTime is reporting a new trend of Chinese criminals developing their own file downloaders and rootkits...
