As speeds go up, the amount of power needed to push information over copper at those speeds goes up as well. If I recall correctly, they've had some issues with 10 gig Ethernet over copper for just that reason. Eventually we're going to need to move to optical interconnects.

Submission + - Suitable naming conventions for workstations 1

spectre_240sx writes: "There has been a lot of discussion around naming servers, but I haven't seen all that much about workstations. Where I currently work, we have a lot of information in our workstation names; site, warranty end date, machine type, etc. I'm of the opinion that this is too much information needed to access a machine and it can certainly be stored in the computer description. I'd love to hear how others are naming their workstations and some pros and cons for different naming schemes. Should computers be logically tied to the person that they're currently assigned to or does that just cause unnecessary work when a machine changes hands? Do the management tools in use make a difference on how workstations should be named?"

Did you read your own post? The IP address would be in two potentially authoritative places in this case. The device and the DHCP server. That sounds like a recipe for mistakes to me. Someone who didn't already have knowledge of that environment would have a real hard time figuring out what how things were set up.
