since brewing waste was added to pig feed a few years ago, an unprecedented problem has emerged at hog farms around the country -- explosive manure foam. several barns have exploded, in one instance killing hundreds of pigs. more commonly, the noxious foam seeps up from the shitheap underneath the barn, through the slats in the floor, and into the pens. this widespread, extant problem is being addressed by these new regulations.

Submission + - U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fall 10% Since 2005, but HFC's still a problem (reuters.com)

SpankiMonki writes: U.S. greenhouse gas emissions fell nearly 10 percent from 2005 to 2012, more than halfway toward the U.S.'s 2020 target pledged at United Nations climate talks, according to the latest national emissions inventory.

Meanwhile, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) saw a dramatic rise of over 309 percent during the reporting period. Although the US and China recently agreed to reduce HFC production, the two countries accounted for the bulk of the increase in HFC emissions over the reporting period.

HFC use and emissions are rapidly increasing as a result of the phaseout of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and growing global demand for air conditioning. Although safe for the ozone layer, the continued emissions of HFCs – primarily as alternatives to ODS and also from the continued production of HCFC-22 – will have an immediate and significant effect on the Earth’s climate system. Without further controls, it is predicted that HFC emissions could negate the entire climate benefits achieved under the Montreal Protocol.

There already are low-cost, natural water filtration techniques being used across the world that produce clean water at a higher rate, like biosand filters. For water projects i have previously worked on, how quickly water is purified has been a significant practical concern for the folks who would benefit from the project. That was the reason that solar stills were dismissed, for example; they require more effort and materials to construct, but even then have a higher flow rate than the xylem filter. Also, how often the filter must be replaced is another big practicality issue.

You must be speaking with a fairly stringent geographical restriction on your comment. "Whether your geographic location experiences significant changes in weather or not, seasons do in fact occur" -- yes, it might be autumn in America, but in Mali there are two seasons: wet and dry. Seasons only exist where the climate allows for them; they do not exist (at least how you conceive of them) in many regions across the world. Insisting that seasons exist where there are none of the environmental changes that define seasonality is pointless and wrong.

Submission + - Private investigators using license plate scanners to make their own databases

scorp1us writes: I've noticed these cars driving around in Maryland. I've seen the same green Elantra in White Marsh many times. Today I saw one in Cockeysville. I trapped the guy in a private parking lot and asked him a few questions. He would not say who he was or who he was working for other than for a private investigator firm, and that they had 9(!) cars.
He was just driving around all the parking lots he could and the public ones. To me, that is trespassing, but they get to build their database anyway, unrestricted by any law on where or retention time. And who knows for what purpose?

Submission + - "451" Error Will Tell Users When Governments Are Blocking Websites (vice.com)
