What's the difference, data-mining wise, between having a Facebook account and willingly using your real name all over the place online? People are perfectly happy to do the latter. I don't see why those people would care about the former. (I guess there's tracking through facebook buttons all over the place, so maybe suppose that people have solid blockers for that.)

The vibrations don't travel instantly through the surrounding geology, so if you know instantly when a quake happens at the epicenter, you can still give meaningful warning to people in outlying areas. Also (as a non-geologist), I suppose there's probably patterns that show up before the biggest part of the quake...if you start feeling what seems like a 3.0, but your phone can alarm with "This is going to get up to an 8.0 in twenty seconds", it could save your life.

Making the generous assumption that this is a brain slip and not a troll, seconds don't normally go up to 60. They stay in the range of 0..59, which means there's sixty of them. Counting from 0 to 60, including the 0, gives you 61 seconds in that minute.

If you listened to the interviews from the very beginning, the Sony Pictures CEO's line has basically always been "Guys, I can't _officially_ say that we're still releasing it until we negotiate more, but I swear to god it's still going to happen unless the theaters are even dumber than I thought". Dude sounded really pissed and barely restrained by his PR department; I'm convinced that it was 100% playing hardball with distributors and 0% international politics.

Honestly I'm amazed at the reporting on this. THEATERS caved. Sony said "uh, we're not going to open the show in like two theaters nationwide", theaters took about a week to snap out of "oh god horror the turrists" mode...but it seemed pretty obvious from the beginning that that was going to be the timeline here.

I've had a different brand, less fancy, but whenever the automation kicked in it terrified the cats. Which of course means that they went anywhere BUT the litter box.

It's like that electric car thing where you still need to generate power somewhere, and if you're not using clean energy, you're just moving the location of the pollution.

Okay the cups are probably greater magnitude of waste but still, unused coffee does have a higher cost than just "pour it down the drain".

Maybe with more of a PC bent, but I'm not sure how I'd pull that off without a big stash of old hardware. Probably worth it for Doom and Quake, but the real gem will be text adventure games. Sitting on my dad's lap while he played them was a big part of how I learned to read.

Last I heard, the big benefit of twitter is that they didn't censor or hide things, they were uncurated, and gave people exactly what the general public was saying. And you want to CHANGE that?

The fact that they're reviewing DRM filled games on Origin at all tells me that they are aiming for a very different audience than the people who post comments.

I think the party line is that DRM is onerous and hurts paying customers, and that sometimes a legitimate owner of the game will also need to crack the DRM to make it work on their own weird computer. I don't pirate things, but I also don't buy things with nasty DRM, especially the always-online checkers, and I think many people here are the same.
