Comment The illusion of security (Score 2) 67

OK, so now you're encrypted from user to Cloudflare, in plaintext within Clouflare, and possibly in plaintext from Cloudflare to the destination site. That's more an illusion of security than real security. Even worse, if they have an SSL cert for your domain, they can impersonate you. Worst case, they have some cheezy cert with a huge number of unrelated domains, all of which can now impersonate each other.

TFA implies he caused the delay, when in fact incompetent airport security staff caused the delay.

I'll go you one further, and suggest that inadequate airport design caused the delay.

In particular, hiring a human being to stare at a hallway for 8 hours a day to make sure nobody walks this way instead of that way is not a good design. People -- even well-trained, competent people, with the best intentions -- are notoriously bad at doing mind-numbingly tedious tasks like this for hours at a time.

Machines, on the other hand, could be employed to do the same job more effectively and reliably. It doesn't even need to be particularly high-tech: a simple one-way turnstile (perhaps augmented with a video camera to sound an alarm if the turnstile is tampered with or somehow bypassed) would do a more reliable job, and as a side benefit would not need to be paid a salary.

It's a fringe brand in that Ferrari is a fringe brand. I don't think most people wouldn't want one but I don't know a soul who has one. Very few have seen them.

We get a warped view here in Silicon Valley. Lots of Teslas. No Supercharger stations, though. There are a fair number of electric car outlets around, of too many varieties.

True. My Android phone has no Google account, so I disabled Google Account Manager, Google Bookmarks Sync, Google Contact Sync, Google One Time Init, Google Play Magazines, Google Play Movies and TV, Google Play Music, Google Play Store, Google+, Market Feedback Agent, and Picasa Uploader. No major problems.

Really? Rich guys would enlist others to donate blood in their names.

During the Civil War the Confederates instituted the draft and conscripted their citizens. The rich people paid 300$ to make someone else (usually people who had already served their draft) enlist on their behalf. I think there was one case of one enterprising Southerner who enlisted several dozen times (and then deserting at the first opportunity).

Comment Hospital networks are very vulnerable. (Score 5, Interesting) 78

I have sat in many consulting rooms and examination rooms in the hospitals, with a lone pizza box computer with WindowsNT or Windows64 screen saver. All alone, the computer, its ports all freely available for me to plug anything I wanted, even spare RJ-45 ethernet ports next to it for me to plug in anything I wanted. It would be trivially simple to plug in an USB keylogger dongle to the back USB port.

Wondering if all the hospital networks are already compromised beyond repair. If the doctors use same passwords for their hospital account as well as their personal account, they too would be very vulnerable. Some of the doctors I know are surgeons who would wield a scalpel with great confidence and would think it is routine to make a 20 cm long incision across the stomach. But are scared of the stupid computer and were mortally afraid of changing the password, or the default screen saver.

Quite literally in this little square miles CORPORATIONS *ARE* PEOPLE. The corps vote like they are people, and the City of London police are their enforcement arm, giving the corporations police powers.

That's quite correct, and not an exaggeration. The "City of London" (now a tiny part of London) has a governmental structure left over from the Middle Ages. (It was codified in 1189AD, but is older than that.) It's one of the few holdovers from the feudal era that hasn't been modernized. The City of London Police should have been absorbed into the Metropolitan Police decades ago, but haven't been.
