Submission + - Sony to buy Sony Ericsson (techworld.com.au)

angry tapir writes: "Sony has said it will acquire Ericsson's 50 percent share in their Sony Ericsson mobile phone joint venture, turning the company into a subsidiary in January 2012. The Tokyo-based electronics maker said in a press release it will pay Ericsson €1.05 billion (US$1.5 billion) in the deal, which includes several sets of related patents and a cross-licensing agreement for intellectual property."

Can someone please provide links or info on these competitors and what iPhone "killers" they're supposedly producing? What exactly is it they will be killing?
Reality is that while it's a huge success for Apple in terms of making a big profit (huge profit margin on devices like this), it does not in any way threaten the existing world wide mobile players such as Nokia, Motorola, SEMC etc.
Furthermore, mobile phones are not Apples core business, and entering the market with the aim to become a top handset manufacturer requires a LOT more than putting out one cool albeit heavily locked down PDA, bolting on cell technology and convincing one operator to sell it as a phone.
Personally, I think the greatest long term value for Apple in this whole enterprise is the strengthening of the brand that will hopefully enable them to do better in their core business areas.

Submission + - Nintendo opens up the Wii (theglobeandmail.com)

Raver32 writes: "Nintendo Co. has opened its blockbuster Wii game system to independent video-game developers for the first time, the company announced Wednesday. Nintendo said it will let individuals and outside game studios create and sell downloadable Wii games with a tool called WiiWare. Gamers will be able to purchase the games through the console's Wii Shop channel starting in early 2008. Perrin Kaplan, a Nintendo spokeswoman, said the game-creation kit is designed for people with at least some knowledge of computer programming. Developers can start designing games using a PC but must complete them on the Wii console, Kaplan said. "Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, in a statement."

Submission + - Science can regrow fingers like magic!

TurdTapper writes: "From the article:

Researchers are trying to find ways to regrow fingers — and someday, even limbs — with tricks that sound like magic spells from a Harry Potter novel.
There's the guy who sliced off a fingertip but grew it back, after he treated the wound with an extract of pig bladder.

I wonder what it would take to increase the size of my manhood...perhaps shredded shark cartilage."

Submission + - NASA signs memorandum of understanding with Virgin

caffiend666 writes: "Tuesday, NASA signed a memorandum of understanding with Virgin Galactic. Although not a partnership, it is interesting to see NASA work with even more private spaceflight companies. The cryptic agreement includes that 'The memorandum is only a framework to explore potential collaborations. It does not include training of NASA astronauts, an agreement to buy seats on a Virgin Galactic flight, or provision of technical advice by NASA to Virgin Galactic.'"

Submission + - Heroic Slashdotter Mistakes Pron for Rape

ObiWanStevobi writes: Ok, since this is considered an invasion case, I picked YRO. I also figured a sword qualifies as a handheld device.

A man who lives in his mother's basement, and has a sword collection, is being charged after breaking into his neighbor's house. He broke in after hearing what sounded like a woman being raped. He burst through the door weilding his sword with a +3 Dexterity adrenaline rush. The frightened wanker then proceeded to show him(James Van Iveren AKA Krunk the Slashdotter) that he was alone and just watching a porno. Van Iveren is now being charged on several counts such as trespassing and damage to property for breaking the door. LINK
