morpheus83 writes: Astronomers have discovered the largest diamond in the galaxy, located at a distance of 50 light years from earth in the Constellation Centaurus. The space diamond is virtually an enormous chunk of crystallized carbon, 4,000 kilometers in diameter which makes up ten billion trillion trillion carats or five million trillion trillion pounds. Scientists believe that the diamond is the heart of an extinct star that used to shine like the Sun.

Gary writes: "A team from the University of Tokyo have genetically engineered a mouse that does not fear cats. By tweaking genes to disable certain functions of the olfactory bulb (the area of the brain that receives information about smells directly from olfactory receptors in the nose) the researchers were able to create a "fearless" mouse that does not try to flee when it smells cats, foxes and other predators."

morpheus83 writes: "A radiator for the brain has been developed at Japan's Yamaguchi University that will cool and calm the over-heated brains of epileptics during a seizure.Takashi Saito and collegues at the university have patented a brain-cooling apparatus that can be surgically buried in the skull for topically cooling the brain."

Submission + - Sharp's tiny LCD doubles up as a scanner

morpheus83 writes: It's all of 3.5-inches but this LCD screen from Sharp features an integrated optical scanner that could be used to scan business cards, but also be used as a method for multi-touch input. The prototype was seen at the Ceatec exhibition. Possible uses include the ability to recognize fingers or other objects and as biometric lock on your phone. And since each pixel has a scanner it may as well be a multi-touch screen.

morpheus83 writes: "Seoul semiconductors has developed a single LED with brightness of 400 lumens. This is around 4 times brighter than convention LED emitting around 100 lumens maximum. This high performance LED, as a next-generation lighting source, is also claimed to be the brightest LED at the level of 8W in the industry. The single package product emits up to 420 lumens at 600mA maximum and 350 lumens on average."

A comment says The story about 12 year old co-founder is a big oversell...I know because I broke the story on funding two days ago. The CEO Karl Mehta and Arjun's dad is the real guy behind it...arjun just came up with part of the idea for it, and is not really involved with the business per se. Arjun's mention on the site is a gimmick which will be rectified soon...the release doesn't mention him and for good reason. Venture beat is investigating it, turns out the it is a hoax. Father using his son to make millions.

morpheus83 writes: "Iran has blocked access to the Google search engine and its Gmail email service as part of a clampdown on material deemed to be offensive. Hamid Shahriari, the secretary of Iran's National Council of Information did not explain why the sites were being blocked. Google, Gmail and several other foreign sites appeared to be inaccessible to Iranian users from Monday morning. Iran has tough censorship on cultural products and internet access, banning thousands of websites and blogs containing sexual and politically critical material as well as women's rights and social networking sites."

They claim the iPod touch will have the same 480 x 320 resolution as the iPhone, run OSX and feature a single button home navigation. It will have the same form factor as the iPhone with a few exceptions, the outside rim will be black and not silver and will be slightly thicker.

Submission + - Illinois University to get fastest Supercomputer

morpheus83 writes: The National Science Foundation last week received approval from the National Science Board to create a $208 million supercomputer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It will be home of the IBM Blue Water, a supercomputer believed capable of a petaflop — one thousand trillion operations per second. IBM Blue Gene the current fastest supercomputer has only one third the expected power of Blue Water. Surprisingly the building which will house the supercomputer meets the space requirements but may not meet power requirements.

Submission + - Panasonic's Minority Report styled iris scanner

morpheus83 writes: Panasonic System Solutions Japan has developed the "Walkthrough Iris Identification System", the system is able to enable verification of a person walking (at 1 m per second) from a distance of more than 1 m, this is due to improved camera composition and "eye position sensing technology" that quickly processes data before the person passes in front of the system. It does not require the subjects to focus on the equipment and is being marketed towards airports and high-security office buildings.
