Submission + - Radar Reveals Ancient Egyptian City (heritage-key.com)

Darkman, Walkin Dude writes: A team of Austrian Archaeologists have uncovered the ruins of the ancient city of Avaris, the summer capital of the Hyksos in the 16th century BC. The excavation team found this area using a combination of magnetometry and resistivity surveys. Several architectural features including houses, temples, streets, cemeteries and palaces can be seen. The team has also been able to make out the arrangement of neighborhoods and living quarters.

Dr. Irene Forstner-Muller, Director of the mission said that approximately 2.6 square kilometers have been investigated using a combination of geophysical survey and excavation. (..) She explained that the aim of the magnetometric and resistivity surveys were to define the borders of ancient Avaris. The team has succeeded in identifying a collection of houses and a possible harbor area. A series of pits of different sizes are also visible but their function has not yet been determined.

Submission + - Wheres my flying car?

Darkman, Walkin Dude writes: "The oft-asked question among slashdotters is, where is my flying car? Well that question has been answered by inventor Gilo Cardozo and British adventurer Neil Laughton with their flying dune buggy, which Mr Laughton plans to take on an expedition from London to Timbuktu, in a voyage reminiscent of the Victorian-era explorers.

With the help of a parachute and a giant fan-motor, Neil Laughton plans to soar over the Pyrenees near Andorra, before taking to the skies again to hop across the 14-km (nine-mile) Straits of Gibraltar. The team behind it calls the Skycar the world's first road legal biofuelled flying car."

Darkman, Walkin Dude writes: "I am conducting research on using "catapult" style maglev launchers to offer single stage low orbit transport, via a launch tower. If you had the financial backing and wanted to start your own "space company", what would you need, in terms of industrial support, materials required, personnel, and subsidiary companies?"

Submission + - Internet war against Scientology escalates (4freeimagehost.com)

Darkman, Walkin Dude writes: "In a follow up to an earlier story, the war declared by the internet group calling itself "Anonymous" appears to be spilling off the internet and onto the streets, as rallies and protests are called to indicate a groundswell of support for those opposed to Scientology.

A second message has been released by Anonymous, and rumours abound of DDoS attacks against mainstream Scientology websites, blackfax attacks, and a variety of other assaults on the Church. In unrelated news, many of the "chan" sites said to be associated with the Anonymous have been offline in recent days."

This group has gained notoriety in the past with stunts such as threatening to detonate "dirty bombs" in stadiums nationwide in the US, leading to one arrest. Stories are spreading throughout the web of this bold declaration, and the main Scientology website has been offline since the statement was released."

Submission + - Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens interbred?

Darkman, Walkin Dude writes: "A recent Daily Mail issue has a fascinating article about the possibility that Homo Sapiens interbred with Neanderthals, which could be the reason for the mysterious disappearance of the Neanderthals some twenty thousand odd years ago. Could this also be the reason that white or pale skin and blonde hair originated in northern Europe, and nowhere else?"
