If anything S.P. should be footing the bill for all the proceedings simply because she used such easy/obvious answers that it was inevitable to happen.

Great idea. Maybe we could make rape victims pay to prosecute and incarcerate their attackers. After all, look how they were dressed ... they were clearly asking for it.

Don't blame the victim, moron.

The Internet is a gigantic computer network. E-mail, Gopher, newsgroups, DNS, remote desktop, multiplayer games, and the Web are some applications that use the Internet. The world wide web is all the websites accessible by using an Internet browser. Some of those (Gmail, etc.) provide web-based interfaces to other Internet services.

You need to learn a little bit about signing.

Just like Apple can revoke the key of a single application in the app store, so to can the key of an applet or webstart application be revoked. In fact, java applications can be signed down to jar file level.

Ability to revoke individual applications is not a reason to refuse java. And since Apple themselves produce the JVM on Macs neither is the excuse about needing to control security. They can issue a patch any time they like for their own JVM.

Actually it wouldn't because with the file systems suddenly going RO there was no tmp file storage anywhere and one side effect of that was that I couldn't open any new windows - I just got an empty frame and that was it... but I admit gmail didn't cross my mind :)

That's awful!

I've noticed the same thing with Firefox - it saves your session constantly in case it crashes. I had a Seagate drive that kept locking up for 60 seconds (I RMA'd it), and Firefox would freeze right along with it, even though disk cache was off. Apparently you can turn session store off, but it still requires disk access for other stuff - maybe extensions.

Chrome to the rescue? ;)

The interesting thing about the freezing fiasco was Steam games usually wouldn't crash - just freeze for a little while. (about 75 seconds, and then there's massive input lag for a while)

Terry Childs was naive. I am not horn blowing, as I am sure I am not as technically talented as others, but I am a battle hardened motherfucker in the work place. If you dont think others won't turn on a dime and stab you in the back, especially in a public service position, then you need to open your eyes or you learn the hard way.

As i have in the past, as as terry has now.

There is no need to be an asshole, just vigilant.

That's a gross over simplification. I recently saw an article about an ex-NASA astronaut that is developing a new type of rocket that could cut the travel time to Mars by 1/3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable_Specific_Impulse_Magnetoplasma_Rocket It isn't just a matter of "We have the technology to get there" It is also a matter of "How can we get there and still be alive. The most dangerous part about a mission to Mars is getting there and back. There are so many threats presented by space travel and if we are going to try to travel to Mars, we damn well better actually make it there. The easiest way to reduce this risk is spending less time in space and that means getting there faster. So no, the technology is not ready, has not been ready, and will not be ready for a while. Just think about it. Imagine a micrometeor ends up being responsible for the failure of a project like this that cost billions. We still have a lot of issues to work out and a lot of knowledge to be gained. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micrometeoroid

Yeah, Tor isn't designed for bulk data transfers. If you want to use BitTorrent anonymously, via onion routine, try I2P instead—but make sure to configure your client properly. The actual peer connections need to go through I2P, not just the communication with the tracker. There's a built-in web-based client that's correctly configured by default. All the peers have to be inside I2P, of course; you couldn't join a non-I2P swarm without giving away your real IP address anyway.

Is leaving a company in working order a criminal offense now? The fact that nothing broke until the new guys got ahold of the equipment was signs enough that his intent was not criminal, but self-preservative. It's understandable that he could be taken into custody under suspicion -- but the lack of damage showed that those suspicions were misplaced. Then, the complete incompetence shown by his employers showed that his motives were much more likely to be abandoning a sinking ship, piloted by blame-happy idiots than some short-sighted plot for revenge. At that time, it should have reverted back to an employment matter, and criminal charges should have been dropped.
